Temples of Simferopol

• Kebir Jami Mosque

  

  Kebir-Jami Mosque is another of the most significant historical attractions. They say that this is the oldest building in the city, and it was from her that Simferopol got its first name - Ak-Mosque, which means "White Mosque". • Holy Trinity Church and Convent

  

  In the old city of Simferopol there is the Holy Trinity Convent - one of the oldest temples in the city. In 1796, a modest wooden Greek church of the Holy Trinity was built on the current site of the monastery, and only in 1868 a stone building was built here. During the period of Soviet rule, the temple almost became a boarding school, but local believers did not allow this to happen. The convent appeared here in 2003.

  One of the most significant Crimean shrines is kept here: the icon of the Mother of God "Sorrowing". There is also a museum of St. Luke. You can explore the temple completely unhindered, but photographing is prohibited in some of its places. There is a large tank in the yard, from where you can take cool holy water with you.

  If you don't know yet, then Tavrida is the name of the peninsula after its annexation to Russia in 1783. And the central museum of Taurida is the most important historical museum of the peninsula. In no museum will you find as much information about its history as here, and therefore the place is simply a must-visit for all guests of the Crimea, if you are at least as much interested in its history.

  The collection has more than 150 thousand exhibits. This is a significant collection of archaeological objects, a collection of numismatics, a unique collection of graphics of the XVIII-XIX centuries with views of the Crimea, a substantial photo and documentary fund. The exposition is divided into sections: Protected landscapes of the Crimea, Nature of the Crimea (paleontology, geology, relief), the Past of Taurida (history and archeology of the Crimea from ancient times to the XV century), Taurida province, Crimea during the Great Patriotic War. • TNU Zoological Museum

  The Zoological Museum of V.I. Vernadsky Tauride National University contains more than 3,700 exhibits, many of which are unique. Among them are the lower jaw of a sperm whale, the skull of a killer whale, pelvic bones, the vertebra and rib of a fin whale, a southern fur seal, penguins, albatrosses, anglerfish, stickfish, shells of many mollusks, sea acorns and much more. The entire exposition is divided into two sections: the department of invertebrates and the department of vertebrates.

  Unfortunately, visiting this museum is carried out only on a group basis and by appointment. That is, you can't just come to the museum and pay money for admission, but you need to call the university staff in advance and coordinate the visit. It is possible to conduct only organized excursions, that is, groups of people from 10 (and, preferably, no more than 20; if more, then you have to divide the group); individual excursions are not conducted. • Museum of Trolleybuses of Crimea

  This museum was created at the Simferopol trolleybus Park and tells about the history of this electric transport on the Crimean peninsula. It is not surprising that he appeared here, since the local trolleybus system is unique. After all, it is between Simferopol and Yalta that the longest trolleybus route in the world is located. It is listed in the Guinness Book of Records and even today you can drive it from the airport - this is route No. 55. But back to the museum.   This museum is not for a wide range of visitors, but definitely everyone who visited it will remember it for a long time.   Simferopol has its own pedestrian zone formed by Pushkin Street and several streets crossing it. This is a favorite place for evening walks of locals and tourists, "hangouts" of young people. It is almost no different from all the other pedestrian tourist zones on resorts of Crimea, but the scale is more modest, although the zone itself is very extensive. Here you can also sit in a cafe or restaurant; find all the necessary infrastructure for tourists, including travel agencies or currency exchange; watch street performers or listen to street musicians. But if you come here not at the height of the tourist season, you may be disappointed by its sparseness.

• Salgirka Botanical Garden

  

  This botanical garden is also known as the Botanical Garden of the Tauride National University (TNU) or Vorontsov Park (Vorontsovka). In fact, this is a large open-air park where you can not just walk, but also get acquainted with the rich local flora and fauna, see beautiful flower gardens. There are very few animals here, except for squirrels and ducks. The most interesting exhibits in the park are marked with signs. In general, the place is interesting and pleasant, but it is worth spending time on it only if you stay in Simferopol for a long time.

• Gagarin Park (Yuri Gagarin Park)

  

  This is the largest park in Crimea by area, more than 50 hectares. That is why this green area is called the "Lungs of Simferopol". The park was formed in the 60s in a swampy place, and received, as usual in those years, the "fashionable" name Gagarin Park.

  In the park you can see sculptures and memorials dedicated to cosmonautics, military glory and other topics. There are playgrounds, an amusement park, walking paths, you can ride a water bike (catamaran) on one of the lakes. The park is not distinguished by its rich flora and fauna, but there are a large number of squirrels here. For many years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the park was not occupied, and now it looks rather dilapidated, and frankly speaking, there is not much interesting for tourists here.

• Scythian Naples

  

  Scientists believe that an ancient city existed on the site of Scythian Naples in the 3rd century BC, namely one of the largest Scythian settlements, which in those distant times occupied an area of about 20 hectares. The name Naples translates as "new city".

  In the second century BC, the city was in its heyday, and in the 3rd century AD it was destroyed by the Goths. In its heyday, Scythian Naples was a major center of culture and trade, and because of the constant wars between the Goths and the Scythians, it was surrounded by powerful walls.

  Currently, there is an open-air museum-reserve on the territory of the ancient settlement, the grand opening of which was carried out on July 25, 2011. At the moment, Scythian Naples, as a monument of ancient culture, is of great historical value. Archaeological excavations and research are still being conducted here. Moreover, new historical objects and objects appear there every year, so even visiting it every year, a tourist will find something special and interesting.   🚶 How to get there: Scythian Naples is located within the city south-east of the center on a hill, 1 Archeologicheskaya str. (Scythian Naples on the map). You can drive up to it by car, bike or take buses No. 4, 24, 85, 108 to the final stop on Tarabukina Street and walk a little. But it is much more interesting to get to Naples on foot from the old city, for which you need to start climbing the hill from Neapolskaya Street, and then along the cliff you will have a wonderful panoramic view of the city.

• Karaite Kenassa

  Karaite Kenassa is a prayer house of Karaites, believers of one of the varieties of Judaism (the religion of the Jews). The Kenassa in Simferopol was built in 1891-1896, but was closed by the authorities in 1930. In 1934-1935, the building was rebuilt, partially deprived of the iconic decor, and in 1936 the editorial office of broadcasting moved there.

  Today it is an architectural monument that can be viewed only from the outside. The attraction as a whole is for an amateur, since it is impossible to get inside, and good photos will not work because of the fence, for which it is impossible to get and trees.

• Vorontsov's House

  

  It is an architectural and historical landmark of Simferopol. It is known for the fact that the imperial family stayed here. This building was built in 1826-1827 for Governor-General Naryshkin. In 1834, the governor's widow sold the mansion to Novorossiysk Governor Vorontsov.

  The house-palace is quite unpretentious, without any special frills. But it was always kept in perfect condition for receiving high-ranking guests. Unfortunately, what you will see today is just a reconstruction of the palace, which it has been subjected to repeatedly. And although many details have been preserved, this is a completely different palace. We do not recommend visiting it specifically and without fail, but if you find yourself in Vorontsov Park (Salgirka), on the territory of which it is located, it is worth exploring.

• Emine-Bair-Khosar or Mammoth Cave

  

  Emine-Bair-Khosar, also known as mammoth cave, is one of the most beautiful caves in the Crimea. It is located on the plateau of the Chatyr Dag mountain range at an altitude of 1000 meters. Only part of the cave, about 700 meters, is open to tourists. Inside there is a lake and skeletons of prehistoric animals, including a mammoth, which is why the cave got its second name - Mammoth Cave.

  The cave is open for tourist visits and is well equipped with paths, railings, stairs, lighting. It is visited strictly with a tour guide in a group on one of three routes to choose from. The guide's services are included in the entrance fee. To get to the caves, you must first buy a ticket at the ticket office for the route you are interested in, and then you need to wait a little for the group to gather (no more than 45 minutes) at the entrance to the cave. After the gathering of the group or after the time has elapsed, even if the group has not gathered, the tour begins with an instruction, and then the descent down. Before visiting, be sure to go to the toilet (located at the entrance, free of charge), since there is no one inside, and if you really want to, you will have to interrupt the tour and go upstairs. It's very cold in the cave, about +5℃, so dress warmer. Do not be self-confident that you will not freeze in a thin jacket, for an hour and a half of the tour you can freeze even in a jacket. • Marble Cave

  

  The marble cave is located on the Chatyr Dag mountain plateau just a kilometer from another popular tourist cave of Emine-Bair Khosar. It got its name because it was formed in the rocks of marble-like limestone. Like Emine-Bair-Khosar, the Marble Cave was formed under the influence of water and time, which took many millennia and even millions of years. But unlike Emine-Bair-Khosar, it is larger and more spacious. One of the halls of its halls – the Perestroika Hall or Avalanche, is the largest cave hall in the Crimea and one of the largest in Europe. Its length is about 100 meters, and its height reaches 28 meters. And she is also considered the most beautiful in the Crimea, and if she competes in entertainment, then only with Emine-Bair-Khosar.

• Red Cave

  

  The Red Cave (also "Dogwood-Koba") is known as the longest of the explored caves of the Crimea to date. The length of only the studied part of it is more than 21 kilometers, and it has not yet been fully studied. This length was obtained as a result of the merger of several caves into a whole complex, numbering 6 floors and including many halls, galleries and wells. The length of some halls reaches 80 meters, and the height is 30 meters. It got its name from the red limestone rock in which it was formed. The Su-Uchkhan stream passes along the bottom, forming a series of lakes and waterfalls, and the Naruzhe waterfall a few hundred meters from the cave. It is equipped for tourist visits, and there is also an extreme route with special equipment along the underground river.

  Also not far from the cave and waterfall there is a landscape recreation park "Fairy Valley", through which a path leads to the entrance to the caves and to the waterfall. • Children's Park

  The Children's Park in the center of Simferopol is one of the best places to go with children during a vacation in the city. It is believed that this is the first in the USSR and the second in the world park specifically for children, it was opened in 1958.

  The park has a zoo, attractions, a Ferris wheel, a children's observatory, an aquarium, a terrarium, a center for children's creativity. • Giant oak "Hero of Taurida"

  The giant oak "Bogatyr of Taurida" is located in the Children's Park. The circumference of the trunk is 6 meters, and the age of the oak is from 600 to 750 years. According to some versions, it was this giant oak that inspired A.S. Pushkin to write the lines "Lukomorye has a green oak..." in the poem "Ruslan and Lyudmila", and therefore a glade of fairy tales with characters from the poet's works was created here. In 2007, the oak was assigned to the nature reserve fund of territorial significance and is protected by law.

• Simferopol Zoo

  The zoo is located on the territory of the children's park. In it, you can see monkeys, rodents, ungulates, mammals, birds in cages. There are more than 300 animals in total.

  This is, in general, a good place to take children there, but many adults have two feelings after visiting it, according to reviews: unfortunately, the cages are not very clean; the animals are poorly cared for, they are sick and emaciated.

• Simferopol Circus

  Simferopol State Circus named after Boris Tezikov began work in the fall of 1959. For more than 50 years of existence, real circus stars have performed in the walls of this arena, among them such recognized masters of their art as Yuri Nikulin, Igor and Emil Kio, Vladimir Shevchenko and many others. And today the circus continues to "keep the brand" and delight its visitors with excellent shows.
