What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
Museum "Underground Sevastopol" operates in a Soviet-built anti-nuclear shelter known as the "C-2" facility. This is a very large-scale and unique structure under the center of Sevastopol, which today can and should be visited in the form of an excursion.
The shelter was designed by Soviet engineers and built in the middle of the last century, when there was a real threat of nuclear bombing of the Black Sea Fleet base in Sevastopol. According to calculations, it is capable of accommodating more than 2,000 people and providing them with protection from a direct nuclear strike to preserve the city's management system and social infrastructure. The priority list included technical specialists who were supposed to begin eliminating the consequences of a nuclear explosion and restoring the basic functions of the city's life.
During the tour you will walk 550 meters at a depth of up to 47 meters. You will learn everything, or almost everything, about the engineering communications of the shelter, the purpose of individual premises and other secrets. You can visit "Underground Sevastopol" with a live tour that starts every 20-60 minutes (frequency depends on the season) and lasts 45 minutes, or you can complete the route yourself by downloading the audio guide to your smartphone from the museum's website. Keep in mind that it's cool underground inside, and therefore it doesn't hurt to take a warm sweatshirt or hoodie with you in the summer.
