Fat Man Beach is one of the few urban beaches of Sevastopol, easily accessible from the center and suitable for combining sightseeing and beach holidays (Tolstyak beach on the map). It is easy to get here if your hotel or rented holiday accommodation is located in the center on the south side of Sevastopol Bay, or vice versa, you can settle next to the "Fat Man" and, if you wish, easily get to the center to explore the sights and walk around the center. However, in order to get directly to the beach, you will have to go down a steep descent with a drop of about 30 meters, and then climb back up.
✔ Advantages of Fat Man Beach
- You can get from the center by ferry + on foot
- There is windsurfing, SUP-surfing, kayaking
- There is some sand on the shore
- Shallow depth, suitable for swimming with children
❌ Cons of Fat Man Beach
- There are large pebbles, and part of the shore is littered with stones
- It is located near the port and urban development, which is why the purity of the water is in doubt
- Little water entertainment
- You can not drive directly to the beach, you need to go down on foot to a height of about 30 meters, and go back up
Of course, do not expect too much from this city beach. The proximity to the center and the port does not affect the purity of the water for the better, and therefore it is very far from the TOP ecologically clean beaches of the Crimea. Nevertheless, there are always enough people who want to relax here, although you can't call it crowded.
The beach is small, its equipped part is about 200 meters long. Although the term "equipment" can be applied here only with a big stretch: there is a lifeguard tower, a changing cabin, and deck chairs are offered for rent for 100 rubles / day, and nothing more. Even the usual beach fast food and drinks are rarely served, so you'll have to bring everything with you. There is no toilet either, you need to run to the nearest bushes on the slope. They say that in previous years it was more fun here, cafes and stalls were open, but in 2021 we didn't see anything like that. From entertainment, there is a windsurfing base here, where you can rent and take an initial course of windsurfing, SUP-surfing, kayaking. There are no typical banana rides, jet ski rentals, etc. here.
There are pebbles on the shore, and there are large ones with sharp corners, a lot of large stones. So for swimming here we highly recommend wearing special beach shoes, otherwise it will be very painful for the feet. There is some yellow sand, but far from the water.
The depth is not very deep, the descent into the water is gentle, but given the large number of stones and old concrete with reinforcement, it is better to be extremely careful, carefully look after the children.
How to get to the beach "Fat Man" in Sevastopol
The Fat Man is located on the north side of Sevastopol Bay (Tolstyak beach on the map). If you stay in a hotel or accommodation on this side, then it will be quite possible to walk to it. But from the center you will have to cross the bay by ferry. To do this, you need to come to Grafskaya marina (pier on the map) and from there swim to the Northern pier, or come to the pier in Artillery Bay (pier on the map) and from there swim to the pier Radiogorka. The cost of the ferry is 30 rubles. The latter option (Artillery Bay-Radiogorka) is better, since it is one and a half kilometers on foot from Rayogorka to the beach, and from the Northern one you will have to walk more than two kilometers. But you can take city buses No. 55 or 49 from the Northern Pier for 26 rubles, and get almost to the beach itself. Learn more about Sevastopol city transport and how to navigate tourists here.
You can get to the "Fat Man" by car, but you can't go directly down to the beach by transport now, and therefore you still have to walk down. You can park your car on the top in one of the alleys of the residential area, there are no paid guarded parking lots nearby.
