What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
St. Nicholas Church or St. Nicholas Memorial Church is one of the most important and unusual architectural and cultural sights of Sevastopol, which we definitely recommend visiting. Unfortunately, it is located quite far from popular tourist routes and areas, and therefore it is not very convenient to visit.
The temple is made in an unusual architecture – in the form of a pyramid, and is located on a hill in the center of a large historical fraternal cemetery, where the defenders of Sevastopol rest during the Crimean War of 1853-1856. It was built on donations from officers, soldiers, and officials from all over Russia from 1857 to 1870. The temple project was created by architect A. A. Avdeev, for which he was subsequently awarded the title of Academician of Architecture. The choice of such an unusual form for an Orthodox church is not accidental – the author of the project took as a basis the idea of the Egyptian pyramids in order to convey the idea of eternity.
Next to the temple on the west side, just a few meters behind the fence, there is another special attraction on the ground – a large cross made of diorite stone. Once it was this cross that crowned the pyramid, but in 1942 it fell as a result of an artillery shell. In 1970, it was restored and re-installed on the dome, but after 30 years it partially collapsed, after which it was replaced with granite, and the original one was decided to leave here on the ground.
The memorial temple and cemetery are accessible to tourists, but do not forget that this is a sacred and memorable place, and therefore it is worth behaving accordingly. You can freely walk through the cemetery to the temple, go inside and admire the views of the city that open from the top of the hill.

🚶 How to get there
St. Nicholas Church is located on the north side of the bay at 43 Bogdanov Street (St. Nicholas Church on the map). It is not very convenient to get from the center here: you will have to go with transfers by public transport or drive around the entire Sevastopol Bay by car, which is almost 30 kilometers. To get there by public transport, first you need to cross from the center by ferry from the Grafskaya pier to the Severnaya pier (cost 30 rubles in 2023), and then take buses №№ 42, 62, 106, 126, 127 26 rubles before the stop "Bratskoe cemetery".
