What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
Malakhov Kurgan was a strategically significant height held by Russian soldiers during the Crimean, Civil and Great Patriotic Wars. The height of the mound is 97 meters above sea level. It got its name after the officer Mikhail Malakhov, who commanded the naval crew and was highly respected not only among sailors, but also among ordinary people.
Today, Malakhov Kurgan is an important historical and patriotic monument that is worth a visit to the guests of the hero city of Sevastopol. The territory of the mound is a large open-air park area, which houses more than 21 monuments. These are old guns, combat installations left over from those times, commemorative plaques and signs, monuments to famous admirals V.A. Kornilov and P.S. Nakhimov, where the places of their fatal wounds are marked. The Peoples' Friendship Alley, where the guests of the city have been planting seedlings of trees of different species since 1958, is also marked. In memory of those who died at this height in the Crimean War, a monument to Russian and French soldiers who died during the Second World War was erected - a monument to the soldiers of the 8th Air army. An almond tree miraculously survived the Patriotic War.
The central point on the territory of the mound is the building of the Defensive Tower of the Kornilov Bastion, where the museum is located. The exposition of the museum repeats the historical stages of the mound itself. It presents various items from the time of the Crimean War, there are also exhibits from the Great Patriotic War. The museum is interactive and will be of interest to a wide range of visitors.
A visit to the Malakhov Kurgan complex and the museum is recommended with a guide who will take you to important places and tell you interesting and informative about the history and exploits of Russian soldiers. The price of excursion service, both separately and for both objects, is not even very high – from 200 rubles, there are discounts for children and preferential categories. If there is no desire to take an excursion, then you can walk around the park for free. There are benches, toilets, cafes on the territory. For better orientation, a scoreboard with a map is placed at the entrance, along the way there are pointers of directions and significant places.
