Chorgun Tower

Chorgun Tower is an architectural monument and a historical landmark in the Crimea, geographically belongs to the city of Sevastopol. Although the place is historically important and even interesting in some ways, unfortunately, we cannot recommend it to visit in any way. Objectively, this is a landmark for a couple of minutes of inspection, and nothing more. It is impossible to enter the tower, there is no information. That's why you will come here, just see the tower on the main street in the center of the village, take a few photos, and in a couple of minutes you will go further. So if you come here, then only by passing on the way from Sevastopol, Balaklava, Foros, Yalta and other resorts of the South Caucasus in the direction of Bakhchisarai.

And here's a bit from the history of the tower. The exact time of its construction is unknown, but it is called the period of the XVI—XVIII centuries. There is a version about its construction in the XIV—XV centuries. Presumably, the tower was part of the palace complex of a Turkish or Tatar nobleman. It has an unusual shape: inside it is round, outside it is twelve–sided. The thickness of the walls is from one and a half to two meters. The height is about twelve meters. It is built of rubble stone on lime mortar, and the corners are made of Inkerman stone. It consisted of several tiers connected by a wooden staircase. The lower tier was used to store water supplies, others for housing. Weapons could be located at the top.

During the Crimean War of 1854-1855, this tower served as a defensive point in the defense of Sevastopol. From its upper tier, Russian troops fired at British and Italian units located on the opposite bank of the Chernaya River.

During the Great Patriotic War, in 1942, German troops discovered a group of Soviet intelligence officers in the tower and tried for almost a day to dislodge them from there, even using a tank for direct shelling of the fortification. However, the tower resisted, and in the morning the Soviet artillery delivered a powerful blow to the positions of the fascists, which allowed the scouts to retreat safely.

🚶 How to get there

Located in the village of Chernorechye, 20 kilometers from the center of Sevastopol (tower on the map). Theoretically, you can get here from Sevastopol by city buses (with a transfer), as well as by intercity bus from Foros and Bakhchisarai, but as we mentioned above, in our opinion it is not worth it. You can use your own transport to stop here on the way from Bakhchisarai to Sevastopol, Balaklava and the resorts of the South Caucasus or back. Normal asphalt leads to the tower, it is located by the road.

💥 We remind you that it is much more interesting to get acquainted with the sights of Sevastopol with the help of excursions, and therefore we advise you to look at online booking options on these proven search and price comparison sites:
