Armored tower battery No. 35 in Sevastopol
Armored turret battery No. 35

The construction of the armored coastal battery No. 35 began in 1912 by decision of the General Staff of Russia, adopted in 1910, and the final commissioning dates back to 1929. It was a powerful fortification that met the requirements of that time, in particular:

  • It was protected from three hits of 405 mm naval shells at the point of concrete walls;
  • It could withstand three hits of two-ton aerial bombs at one point;
  • It provided protection against the penetration of toxic substances.

Before the start of the Second World War, only shooting drills were held here, and she received her first baptism of fire during the defense of Sevastopol from the Germans in 1941, making the first shots on November 7. Due to the incessant massive attacks of the enemy and the inability to resist anymore, on the night of July 1 to 2, 1942, the battery was blown up, and later by order of the People's Commissar of the Navy it was excluded from the Navy as having died while performing combat missions. After the war, it was decided not to restore it, and the preserved casemates were used as ammunition cellars, a command post and personnel quarters of the four-gun 130-mm battery No. 723, located near the array of battery No. 35. The museum appeared here only in 2007.

Today, the battery consists of two towers, each with two 305-mm guns, and several basements for various purposes. Visiting is possible only with excursion service, self-inspection is not provided. You will be taken from the central power station to the well and other auxiliary facilities, taken outside to the tower installations themselves, telling about the history of its creation and the exploits of Soviet fighters.

Considering that this museum is visited for free, but with tickets, you need to come here or book them in advance, since the number of the group, due to the small space of the premises, is limited. Also, due to the fact that the exhibition presents objects and photos showing scenes of death, admission of children under 7 years is prohibited. For a comfortable stay underground, it is worth taking warm clothes with you.
