Cape Chameleon or Toprakh-kaya is one of the most picturesque and unusual capes of the Crimea, one of the natural attractions near Koktebel. Also known as Clay Rock and Camp Cape.

It is located between A quiet bay and Koktebel Bay, separating them. It got its name due to the fact that at different times of the day, depending on the illumination by the sun, its slopes have different shades, i.e. it changes color like a real chameleon. Colors change from grayish-blue in the morning to golden, and at sunset you can even distinguish purple and lilac shades. It is said that in one day it can change color up to 20 times.

The cape is also interesting because it is almost entirely composed of shale and clay of volcanic origin, also known as blue clay. Hence, by the way, its Crimean Tatar name Toprakh-kaya. This clay is considered useful and is used for cosmetic purposes (see all about the therapeutic mud of Crimea), although its effectiveness has not been proven. You can do beauty treatments on your own and for free right on the seashore to diversify your beach vacation in a Quiet Bay. To do this, you need to walk along the shore to the foot of the cape, collect shales of dry clay from the slope, soak it in seawater, smear it, and then let it dry completely on the body, after which it can be washed off into the sea.

The cape is also interesting because theoretically it is possible to walk along the trail to the most extreme point, from the height of which beautiful views of Koktebel and a Quiet Bay open. There is not much to go, from the beginning of the trail near the beach to the observation point of about 500 meters, and you will need to climb to a height of 60 meters. But you need to go carefully and at your own risk. In general, it is forbidden and dangerous to climb to the very top, because the soil of the cape is loose and collapses, there are often landslides and landslides. According to experts, since the middle of the last century, the Chameleon has lost about 35% of its volume. And for this reason, by the way, you should not stay too long on the beach at the foot of the cape.

The cape is located four kilometers from the center of Koktebel (Cape Chameleon on the map). Many paths and a dirt road lead here. You can get by car to the parking lot of a Quiet Bay, and from there on foot to the cape 10 minutes, or immediately from the village on foot 30-60 minutes. It is better to go not along the shore, but through the fields on top along the dirt road for cars.
