General information

Koktebel village is located in the eastern part of the Crimean peninsula, at the foot of the extinct volcano Kara-Dag, in a cozy bay (Koktebel on the map of Crimea). Administratively belongs to Greater Feodosia, the distance to the city of Feodosia is 25 km.

The name of the village is Crimean Tatar. According to one version, it sounds like "the edge of gray-blue hills", according to another – "a gray horse marked with an asterisk on his forehead". A few Tatars inhabited the village from the day of its foundation. Gradually the composition of the population changed, now about 3 thousand people live here, mainly Russians and Ukrainians.

Since the end of the XIX century, Koktebel has been known as a resort and a place of pilgrimage for the Russian intelligentsia. An important role in the popularization of Koktebel was played by the artist and poet Maximilian Voloshin, at whose dacha famous cultural figures visited every summer. Since the death of M. Voloshin to the present day, the former dacha has been hosting writers and tourists, a House of Creativity and a museum function here.

Rest

In Koktebel several beaches along the same coastline. All of them are pebbly, but with a sandy bottom. Due to the large influx of vacationers, they are not the cleanest, but they are constantly cared for and cleaned. On the outskirts of the city there is a famous nudist beach, and a couple of kilometers from the center there is a wonderful sandy beach in a Quiet bay.

The resort also attracts with active recreation. You can rent a kayak or kayak, jet ski, windsurfing, go fishing or boat trip to Karadag Nature Reserve and the Golden Gate. You can also go on a trekking trip through the nature reserve or the nearby hills. Koktebel is also attractive for people who are passionate about gliding, paragliding and hang gliding. Ideal conditions for these sports are created by Mount Klementyeva, whose steep slope faces the village. Those who want to go scuba diving can learn a new lesson at the Diving Center on the territory of the Priboy base.

Children and adults enjoy visiting the water park and dolphinarium. There are three berths in the village, from any of them you can go fishing or sightseeing. It has become a tradition to hold various annual festivals in Koktebel – ethnic and jazz music, Argentine tango, and the Mamakabo Art Festival.

People with lung and nervous system diseases also come here to improve their health. The improvement in the general condition is explained by the unique composition of the air, in which air masses from the mountains, steppes and the sea are mixed. Located in the eastern part of the bay, Cape Chameleon is rich in deposits of blue clay used in the treatment of skin diseases. The largest health resorts of Koktebel are "Blue Bay" and "Primorye".

Infrastructure

The tourist infrastructure in the village is well developed. There is a beautiful embankment, which is the center of tourist life with a large number of cafes and restaurants, tourist attractions and souvenir shops. Nightlife in Koktebel is represented by several nightclubs and late-night restaurants. But fans of electronic dance music will be disappointed, there are no such discos here.

The whole business in Koktebel is built on tourism, so finding housing is not a problem. The choice is very wide: boarding houses, recreation centers, hotels, elite hotels, mini-boarding houses, guest houses, estates and villas. There are several car camps and you can relax in your tent without spending money on housing at all.

Shopping in Koktebel is poorly developed. There is a single shopping center "Sargan" (aka "Fora"), where you can buy the most necessary things. But for real shopping you will have to go to Feodosia, which is easy to do on a local bus.

Weather and tourist seasons in Koktebel

The high tourist season here lasts from July to September, although you can come and swim in June. The first tourists appear here already on the May holidays to open the season. And although not everyone will dare to swim in May, you can already sunbathe.

September is traditionally considered the velvet season. Already in the first days of September, there are noticeably fewer tourists, prices are falling. Cafes and restaurants are open until the last days of the month.

Attractions and entertainment in Koktebel

There are not many attractions in Koktebel. For something interesting, you need to go on excursions, which will not be difficult to buy on the streets and in travel agencies. You can also go to Feodosia (see the sights of Feodosia) by commuter bus. If you like hiking, you can go for a walk in the surrounding area, visit the Karadag Nature Reserve, take a boat trip to the Golden Gate, horseback riding. Entertainment in Koktebel is somewhat better, there are quite a lot of them here, including for children.

• Karadag Nature Reserve

  In the Resort there is the headquarters of the Karadag Nature Reserve - a biostation, from where organized walking tours depart. For those who do not want to walk a lot, boat excursions are organized from the pier of the village along the shores of the reserve, including to one of the symbols of the Crimea – the Golden Gate rock island. • House-Museum of poet and artist Maximilian Voloshin

  Although Voloshin lived and worked at the beginning of the 20th century, the appearance of the modern resort of Koktebel owes him a lot. It was he who made Koktebel the center of bohemia and intelligentsia. Being an artist and naturist, he invited creative intellectuals from all over the Crimea to visit him, and even formed a kind of brotherhood.

  The house-Museum, built in 1913, today operates as a museum. The exhibition contains works by Voloshin as a landscape painter. On the first floor of the museum there is a literary exposition telling about the poet's work. The second floor is a memorial part, Voloshin's workshop is located here in its original form.

  The museum can be visited independently, accompanied by a guide, in the form of an individual excursion.

• Junge Hill

  This is a small hill on the shore on the eastern outskirts of the city. There is not much to see on the hill itself, but you can climb it and take some photos of the beach from a height. A nudist beach begins at the foot of the hill.

  The hill got its name after Professor Junge, the founder of the Koktebel estate. He and his family are buried at the base of the hill.

• Voloshin's grave

  According to the last will of Maximilian Voloshin, he was buried on the top of the Kuchuk-Yenishar mountain in the vicinity of the village. Anyone can take a walk to this place, which will take a couple of hours.

  Even if you are not interested in Voloshin's work, the walk will still seem interesting to you. In addition, from the top of the mountain, where the grave is located, there are wonderful views of Koktebel and the valley.

• Koktebel Water Park

  Not only guests of the village come to have fun at the local water park, but people come here from Feodosia and other neighboring resorts. This is not surprising, because this is the newest of the Crimean water parks. Unfortunately, the prices here are quite high, all services are paid, including parking, locker use, etc. And also, before visiting, check at the ticket office whether all the attractions are working, because sometimes a considerable part of them is closed.

• Dolphinarium

  The dolphinarium hosts two performances daily at 11:00 and 15:00. But in addition to just watching the show, you can also swim with dolphins and belugas for an additional fee. The performances are magnificent and "lively", the children will simply be delighted. Of the minuses, perhaps, only a slightly high price.

Do not expect to see one big aquarium here, all the inhabitants are each in their own small aquarium, but in general it is quite interesting and informative. The kids will definitely like it here.

• Dinotherium and Bird Park

  In our opinion, this is one of the most interesting entertainments in the village. In the park there are: The Labyrinth of Time, the Paleontological Pavilion, the Ornithological Pavilion, the Sundial of the universe of August Hertz.

  The ornithological pavilion contains many exotic birds without cages, and you can talk to them very closely, even touch and feed them.

  In the paleontological pavilion you will be told about the animal world of the planet, the services of a guide included in the entrance fee. You will see a true-sized dinosaur skeleton, learn about evolution.

Useful tips about Koktebel

Shopping and shopping. There is no shopping in Koktebel as such, but you can buy the most necessary things in small stores. The bulk of the shops and the only shopping center "Sargan" ("Fora") concentrated along the main road, Lenin Street.

Meals in Koktebel. There are a lot of cafes and restaurants, there are canteens. Inexpensive and delicious you can eat in the canteens "Spoon" and "Drank, Ate" on the embankment.

Bike rental. You can find a bike for rent from 150 rubles an hour + 50 rubles for each subsequent hour.

What to bring from Koktebel. Koktebel brandy produced at the factory in the village of Shchebetovka near Koktebel will be a great gift. The price is about the same there and there, but in large supermarkets it is sometimes sold cheaper by shares.
