What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
The old Nikolo-Gostinodvorskaya church or the Church of Nicholas the Wonderworker is located in the city center and only 100 meters from St. John the Baptist monastery. In appearance, it does not resemble a temple at all, but rather an administrative building. It was built from 1864-1870 on the site of a dilapidated temple of the 16th century, but in fact it was erected in a new way. The former appearance of the church is not preserved. It is an architectural monument of XVI-XIX centuries. and is protected by the state.
In 1929, the church was closed, and the premises were given to residents for living. Today you can still see on the walls inside the traces of the floors of the 2nd floor, even the batteries installed to heat the rooms have been preserved. Until 2017, the archive of the Cabinet of Ministers of Tatarstan was located here, as evidenced by a barely visible sign at the entrance.
Currently, the temple is under restoration, while it is available for inspection from the outside and sometimes you can go inside.
