The ruins of the fortress of the ancient city of Anakopia rise above New Athos on the Iveron mountain at an altitude of 344 m. It was originally built in the VII century with the participation of the Byzantines, although according to some sources the first fortress appeared here in the III century. Subsequently, it was partially destroyed and rebuilt several times.
To date, the ruins of the fortress are perfectly preserved, the main tower has been completely restored. In our opinion (the authors of the site) these are the best historical ruins in Abkhazia, and definitely the largest and best preserved fortress, of which there are many. On the territory you can walk freely, go inside the tower and climb to the observation deck at the top, which offers a beautiful panoramic view of the city and the coast. Also on the territory there is a functioning Chapel and an artificial source of drinking water.

🚶 How to get there
the fortress is located on a hill 3 kilometers from the center of the city, the ascent begins at Chanba Street, and there is a ticket office on it (fortress on the map. You can partially drive the lift by car, and leave it in a paid parking lot for 100 rubles. The ascent on foot takes 40 minutes on a rocky dirt road.
