What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
The ancient temple in Tsandripsh aka Tsandripsh Basilica - one of the historical and architectural sights of Abkhazia. The temple was built in the Byzantine era, presumably in 543 A.D., i.e. now it is almost one and a half thousand years old, and this, by the way, is one of the oldest temples in Transcaucasia.
Initially it was a small wooden church, but over the centuries it was repeatedly rebuilt during the VIII-X centuries. Today, only ruins remain of the temple, resembling its contours, and of course, there is no question of any beauty. Restoration work is definitely needed here, but so far there is no question of them. So far, the believers have decided to gradually revive it on their own, because this is not only a landmark, but also a sacred place. Today, the area around a little cleaned up (previously everything was overgrown with grass), and several times a week the priest from Gagra conducts services.
