Description and is it worth visiting the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary or Lyhnensky temple is an ancient Orthodox church, one of the most important in Abkhazia, a cultural monument of national significance. It dates back to the X century. The church is interesting not only for its history and significance, but also for its ancient frescoes, some of which have been preserved since the foundation of the temple, and the main part dates back to the XIV century. Here is the grave of Prince Safarbey from the powerful Chachba-Shervashidze dynasty, and cornet Lakrebai Konstantin Shakhanovich, famous for his military exploits during the First World War. Near the temple there are ruins of the palace of Princes Shervashidze-Chachba, and a couple of minutes walk on the Lykhnashta glade there is another interesting place – a centuries-old linden tree.
Now the temple is in a state of very protracted restoration: the facade is covered with scaffolding, and an additional roof is installed on top. By the way, a modern legend is connected with this roof. They say that every time the workers started the restoration, it started raining, and they had to stop work. Therefore, we decided to install another roof on top.
In front of the entrance to the temple there is a tourist market where you can buy local products and products, such as churchkhela, seasonal fruits, chacha, wine, souvenirs, etc. According to tourists, prices here are lower than at resorts.
