📄 Documents for traveling with a child to Abkhazia

The most common question from parents: what documents does a child need to enter Abkhazia. Information changes, so the following rules apply for 2026:

• Children under 14 — entry using a birth certificate is no longer possible. They need either their own foreign passport or be included in the parent's passport with a photo insert.
• Children aged 14 and over — must have their own foreign passport or a Russian internal passport.
• If a child is traveling with one parent — the consent of the other parent is not required. However, if surnames differ, it's better to have the birth certificate to prove relationship.
• With a grandparent or other accompanying adult — a notarized power of attorney from both parents is required.
• Insurance — not mandatory, but we strongly recommend getting a policy for those traveling abroad with coverage for Abkhazia. The healthcare system there is specific.

Pitsunda – in our opinion, the best choice for a family holiday in Abkhazia. It's located away from the transit highway, so it's quieter and the air is noticeably cleaner, especially thanks to the famous pine forest. The scent of pine needles mixes with the sea breeze – for a child with allergies or weak lungs, this is a real lifesaver.

The beach here has fine pebbles, but closer to the water's edge, the pebbles become very small, almost like sand. The entry is gentle, the depth increases gradually – you don't have to worry about your toddler suddenly going underwater. The water is very clear; we hardly encountered any jellyfish or algae. There are sun loungers and umbrellas on the beach, but they're taken from morning in the season, so we advise coming early or bringing your own mat and canopy.

Kids' infrastructure: in the center of Pitsunda, there are several playgrounds, bike rentals, and in the evening, inflatable trampolines and electric cars operate. No problem with food – canteens with home-style cooking are open, and there are shops with fruits and dairy products. The downside – there are no large supermarkets; for serious shopping, you'll have to go to Gagra.

Gagra – water park, parks, and lively buzz

Gagra is the most happening and crowded resort in Abkhazia. If your child is over 5–6 years old and loves noisy fun, then they definitely won't be bored here. The main kids' magnet is the water park (the only one in the country). It's small, but enough for a couple of days of variety. Gagra also has many parks with amusement rides, shooting galleries, trampolines, segway, and bike rentals.

The beach is spacious and pebbly, but almost completely packed during the season. The entry to the water is steeper than in Pitsunda, so you need to be more careful with toddlers. However, on the shore, there are water slides, banana boat rides, parasailing – teenagers will appreciate it. In the evening, you can go to the embankment, where they sell cotton candy, popcorn, and glowing toys.

Downsides: it's a bit dirty on the outskirts and along the roads. If you're not staying in the center, walking with a stroller along narrow sidewalks next to the highway is questionable pleasure. It's better to choose accommodation in Old Gagra or near Primorsky Park; it's calmer there.

Sukhum is the capital, and by Abkhazian standards, the infrastructure here is top-notch. For families with kids, this means: smooth sidewalks (yes, that's a rarity), several parks, a botanical garden, a monkey nursery, and the most well-kept embankment in the country. It's convenient for strolling with a stroller or walking with a child on a scooter – the paths are wide, and there's lighting in the evening.

The beaches within the city are pebbly, with sandy areas on the outskirts (for example, in the Mayak area). The water is clean, but crowded during the season. Kids' entertainment includes a Ferris wheel, playgrounds in parks, and horse riding along the embankment. For schoolchildren, it would be interesting to visit the Abkhazian State Museum or the ruins of Bagrat's Castle.

The downside – it's 115 km from the border, and the highway is tiring, especially with a young child. But if you're planning a 10–14 day vacation and want to combine beach time with city strolls, Sukhum is an excellent option.

Tsandrypsh (also Tsandrypsh) is a village 5 km from the Psou checkpoint. The main advantage for parents is minimal travel time after the border. The child won't have time to get tired, and you're already there. The beach is wide, pebbly with large stones near the water, but it's spacious: even in August you can find a secluded spot. The depth near the shore is shallow, almost no waves – suitable for toddlers to swim.

Downsides: modest infrastructure. There are a couple of cafes, small shops, a pharmacy, a market. Kids' entertainment – a couple of inflatable slides and a trampoline in season. If your child is used to activities, they'll get bored quickly. But as a budget and quiet option for a short 3–5 day trip, it's perfectly fine. Plus, from Tsandrypsh it's easy to go on an excursion to Gagra or Lake Ritsa.

New Athos – for curious kids who ask 'why?'

New Athos is more of a sightseeing hub than a full-fledged beach resort. But if your child is already a schoolkid and loves adventures, a trip here will be memorable for a long time. The New Athos Cave is one of the largest in the world, a real underground fairy tale with lighting and even a mini-subway inside. Nearby is a picturesque waterfall and the abandoned Psyrtskha station, where you can have a photoshoot.

The beaches here are pebbly, narrow, right along the highway. Not convenient for swimming with kids: noisy, and you have to cross the road. Therefore, we advise considering New Athos either as a day trip destination from Gagra or Pitsunda, or as a base for 2–3 days if the sea isn't a priority.

The center has a well-kept park with ponds, swans, and a playground. You can take a boat ride. Food – cafes and canteens with reasonable prices.

Gudauta and Zolotoy Bereg – almost wild getaway for seclusion

Gudauta and Zolotoy Bereg located further south are places for those who want to escape civilization. The beaches here are long, uncrowded, and sand-and-pebble. The water is clean, but in Gudauta it can sometimes be a bit murky after rains due to the river. A plus for kids: they can run around freely and build castles from coarse sand (at Zolotoy Bereg there are areas with yellow sand). The downside: a complete lack of kids' entertainment. No trampolines, slides, or playgrounds.

Infrastructure is spartan: a few guest houses, a couple of cafes, grocery shops. One pharmacy for the whole village. With a young child, it might be tough: if you need a doctor, you'll have to go to Gagra or Gudauta (town). But if you're traveling with teenagers by car and value peace and quiet, this is an excellent option to recharge.

Zolotoy Bereg is notable for its abandoned sanatoriums – older kids enjoy exploring these "haunted castles," but be careful: the buildings are in disrepair.
