Botanical garden in Sukhumi
This is one of the oldest Botanical gardens of the Caucasus, founded in 1838. Surprisingly, the garden originally had a military purpose. It was founded at the initiative of the chief fortified black sea coastline of Lieutenant-General N. N. Rajewski to provide the soldiers with fresh vegetables, and in order to occupy their free time. At the end of the 18th century it was transferred from the military to civilian.
Today the Botanical garden tourists can visit for a fee. This is generally a good place where you can enjoy walking in the shade of the tropical trees and among exotic bushes and flowers, but the price, in our view, overstated. There are dirt paths, a few ponds with fish and turtles, benches for relaxation. The diversity of plant species is not very large, but perhaps stand the old tree – Lime Caucasian age more than 350 years, and the bamboo grove.
Although the entrance fee is quite high, we can assume that these funds do not go to full garden maintenance. Here is not very clean, signs with the names of plants is not all of the exhibits, the variety of plants is not very large. Objectively, you can see all the same that grows freely on the streets of Abkhazia, for example in a garden in old Gagra (free). In addition, the Park is not very big.
