Let's agree right away: we're not saying the popular resorts are bad. Nha Trang is a great place for budget holidays with developed infrastructure. Mui Ne is a mecca for kitesurfers. Phu Quoc has paradise beaches. Da Nang is a golden mean with great hotels.

But there's a nuance. These resorts are so popular that during high season, it's really hard to find a free sun lounger. And Russian speech on the streets of Mui Ne sometimes sounds louder than Vietnamese. And if you want not just to relax, but to truly feel Vietnam – its culture, nature, rhythm of life – it's worth looking into places where mass tourism hasn't yet reached.

We believe that Vietnam cannot be understood in one trip – it reveals itself anew each time. And the best way to experience this is to head to less touristic regions.

Alternative Resorts in Vietnam – Choose a Different Vietnam

Cam Ranh – Silence Instead of Noisy Nha Trang

Let's start with the most obvious and at the same time the most underestimated option. Cam Ranh is not a city or even a resort in the usual sense, but a whole peninsula area turned into a chain of modern resorts. Many tourists don't even know that Cam Ranh is an excellent alternative to overcrowded Nha Trang, which in high season literally suffocates from the influx of tourists from Russia.

The main highlight of Cam Ranh is Bai Dai Beach (Long Beach). It stretches for many kilometers, and even in high season it's easy to find a spot where there's not a soul within a hundred meters. The water here is often calmer than in Nha Trang, and the sand is finer and whiter.

Unlike Nha Trang with its noisy promenade and Phu Quoc, where the shores have been taken over by large hotels, Cam Ranh offers a fundamentally different format. It's a closed resort area with 4-5 star hotels, where everything is "all inclusive": restaurants, spas, pools, kids' clubs. Outside the hotels, there are only a few local cafes and shops.

Phan Rang – Authentic Vietnam Without Tourists

Phan Rang is the case where you get to see the real Vietnam, as it was before mass tourism. The city is located between Nha Trang and Mui Ne, but the atmosphere is vastly different.

There are far fewer foreign tourists here, which means less noise and bustle. Walking or riding around the area on a motorbike, you can observe natural, non-touristy Vietnam. The resort is popular with locals, but they only fill it on weekends and holidays – the rest of the time it's quiet and peaceful.

There aren't many attractions in Phan Rang, and nightlife is almost non-existent. But it has excellent beaches and, what's especially important – incredibly tasty and cheap food. Local restaurants and eateries offer exotic seafood dishes at prices lower than on popular resorts.

Quy Nhon – A City Few Have Heard Of

Few people have heard of Quy Nhon – and that's its charm. The city is tucked between Da Nang and Nha Trang and remains non-touristy for now. There are more locals than Europeans here, a calmer rhythm, and a feeling of the "real" Vietnam without crowds and noise.

Quy Nhon is about space, sea, wind, and beautiful views without filters. Here's what's worth seeing:

• Bãi Tắm Vĩnh Hội Beach – wild, wide, almost empty. Clear water and the feeling that the beach is just for you.
• Temple with a giant Buddha – a quiet place of power with a panoramic view of the city and the sea.

Con Dao Island – A Hidden Gem of World-Class Quality

Con Dao is an island that in 2026 made it into the top 15 most attractive hidden corners of the world according to Lonely Planet. And Travel+Leisure magazine called it the most mysterious and untouched island territory in the world.

Lonely Planet experts emphasize: the main attraction of the island is not huge hotels or an all-inclusive system, but the complete preservation of wild nature. Here you'll find:

• White secluded beaches – Damtrau, Anhai, and Bainhat bays with turquoise water and fine sand, where there's no noise or crowds of tourists
• Sea turtle nesting grounds – the island is Vietnam's main center for saving green sea turtles
• Historical monuments – the memorial complex of the former prison and the legendary Hang Duong cemetery

Lang Co – Seclusion Between Da Nang and Hue

Lang Co is a small village located on the shore between Da Nang and Hue. This place is for those seeking complete isolation from tourist bustle.

The main thing here is the beach. By some estimates, it's considered the most beautiful in Vietnam. It stretches continuously for 10 kilometers – fine white and yellow sand, very pleasant to the touch.

Tourist infrastructure here is poorly developed: besides a few hotels, there's nothing specifically for tourists here. You can eat and be entertained only on hotel grounds.

Da Lat – A Mountain Resort with Eternal Spring

Da Lat is a city located at an altitude of 1,475 meters above sea level. Tourists who come here may feel like they've arrived in a different country. It's clean here, taxi drivers don't bother you, and vendors don't grab your sleeve.

There are no beaches here – Da Lat is a mountain resort. Da Lat's attractions are primarily nature: picturesque valleys, evergreen forests, waterfalls, lakes, and passes. Here are the best routes for hiking and mountain biking.

This is the only place in Vietnam where wine is made. And Da Lat is also the most popular honeymoon destination for Vietnamese newlyweds.

Sapa – Rice Terraces, Mountain Landscapes, and Exotic Tribes

Sapa is a town in northern Vietnam, founded by French colonists in 1910 to escape the hot tropical climate. Today, Sapa is known for its magnificent landscapes and rich cultural heritage.

Sapa is a wonderful place for hiking in the mountains, getting to know the culture of the many ethnic groups living in the north. Tourists come here to see the famous "Love Market," go on trekking hikes through rice fields, or climb the highest peak in Vietnam – Fansipan Mountain.

Vung Tau – Beach Holidays for Locals

Vung Tau is a large city on the coast of southern Vietnam with a population of over 450,000, located 125 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City. It's one of the popular tourist destinations, a beach resort. But primarily not for foreigners, but for local tourists wanting to spend their free time away from the noisy economic capital. People come here for beach holidays, shopping, and entertainment.

Vung Tau can only be called a real beach resort with a stretch: the beaches here are located within the city limits and therefore not very clean. The sand on the beach is dirty due to debris washed up by sea waves and the current from the Mekong River, and the water is not very clean due to industrial enterprises located in the city. The waves are quite strong most of the year, which may only please kitesurfing enthusiasts.

There aren't many attractions in Vung Tau. There's a standard set of temples and pagodas, as in any Vietnamese city. But there are also attractions worthy of special attention – the lighthouse and a giant statue of Jesus about 32 meters high on top of a mountain.

Hoi An – An Open-Air Museum City

Hoi An is a small city in central Vietnam on the coast of the South China Sea. Hoi An is one of the popular tourist destinations. The city is located 25 kilometers north of Da Nang, on the banks of the Thu Bon River, a few kilometers from the coast.

Hoi An, also known by its ancient name Faifo, was an important and very busy trading port in the 16th-17th centuries. Later, the center of trade moved to Da Nang, but in the heart of Hoi An – the old town, the spirit of the ancient trading city has been preserved. And today, Hoi An more than any other place in Vietnam preserves the atmosphere of bygone centuries and is a favorite destination for tourists. In 1999, it was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Hoi An is sometimes called an open-air museum city, because there are 844 officially recognized buildings of historical significance here. The city is also known for its traditional and souvenir shops, and a large number of tailoring workshops. You won't be left without excellent beach holidays here either. Hoi An's beaches are located a few kilometers from the city center, and the quality of the beaches here is top-notch – they're sandy, not crowded, and very clean.

Hoi An's cuisine is a whole other story. In the numerous cafes and restaurants that light up their lights in the evenings, you can taste incredible delicacies for next to nothing.

Cat Ba Island – The Only Beach Resort in the North

Cat Ba Island is the largest of the 366 islands in the archipelago of the same name in northern Vietnam, 140 kilometers from Hanoi. Cat Ba is a sparsely populated island, and most of it is occupied by Cat Ba National Park. The island's territory is mostly hilly, covered with evergreen tropical forests.

Cat Ba is currently the only developed beach resort in northern Vietnam. Along with visiting Hanoi, Sapa, and other sightseeing places in the north, you can add some beach holidays to your trip without a long journey to the central or southern part of the country.

There aren't that many beaches on Cat Ba, but enough to feel comfortable here even in the peak season. There are four developed and equipped beaches in total: Cat Co1, Cat Co2, Cat Co3, and Catba Emerald Beach. All are sandy and located in cozy bays protected from waves and winds.

The center of tourist life on the island is Cat Ba Town, where all tourist infrastructure is concentrated: hotels, shops, cafes, restaurants, travel agencies, banks, transport rentals. All four beaches are within walking distance from the center.
