Description and Is it Worth Visiting
The Prison Museum in Hoi An (Hoi An Prison Relic) is a quiet and still little-known place that few guests of the resort know about. It is not on tourist maps, and it is not easy to find. It hides in a residential neighborhood at the end of a narrow street, and the entrance is a large iron gate between houses with a small sign that is not easy to notice at first glance.
Here, genuine prison cells have been preserved where, during French times and later during the war with the USA, Vietnamese political prisoners and revolutionaries were held. In a separate building, photographs and documents from that era are collected. Information is available in English, everything is told without embellishment – tragically, but honestly. This is not an entertaining tour, but rather an opportunity to understand a complex piece of Vietnam's history.
Getting here is a challenge. The opening hours are irregular, with a long lunch break, and even during working hours the door is often closed. So it's worth just trying to enter if you are passing by. Entrance is free.
This place is not for everyone, but if you are interested in history not from textbooks, but quiet and authentic – it's worth it. Just keep in mind that its openness is a matter of chance.
🕐 Opening hours
There is a schedule from 07:30–11:30 and from 14:00–17:00, Saturday and Sunday – closed. But it operates irregularly, the schedule is not followed. Getting here is a matter of luck; you may have to come several times.
💵 Entrance fee / ticket price
Free.
🚶 How to get there
Located on the outskirts of Hoi An's tourist district (Hoi An Prison Museum on the map). You can walk here from the center, or take a taxi or rented transport. The only problem is finding the prison entrance. On our map, we have indicated the exact location of the entrance; use it as a guide. For orientation, the prison entrance is from the main street Ly Thuong Kiet; you need to find a small passage along a street between houses (there is a small sign pointing to the prison). Walking 100 meters along this street, you will reach the prison gates, and if you're lucky, it will be open.
