Udappu Village (Udappu, Udappuwa) is a small fishing village on the coast 65 km north of Negombo. It is occasionally visited by rare tourists in passing when traveling north and Negombo, including in Anuradhapura or in Trincomalee. Therefore, be prepared for the fact that in the village you will find yourself in the center of universal benevolent attention. But, surprisingly, this attention will be limited only to the smiles of residents or local pestering children. No one will compulsively offer you something to buy or ask for money.
In the center of the village is the main Sri Partha Sarathi Temple dedicated to goddess Draupadi. It is thanks to this temple that the village has earned the attention of the most inquisitive travelers. In front of the entrance there is a large area where various local events are held. In late July-early August, the temple becomes the center of the annual festival in honor of the goddess Draupadi, the final part of which is the traditional Walking of men on hot coals.
In different parts of the village there are several small temples that are open only in the morning or in the evening, and in principle do not represent anything special. And in the village there is a fish market, but you need to visit it very early in the morning, and there is not much to see there.
🚶 How to get there: the village is 65 kilometers from Negombo to the North (village on Negombo interactive map). From the main A3 road, you will need to turn onto the country road Udappuwa rd. and drive along it for another 5 kilometers. The road will take you directly to the center of the village, where the main temple is located.
