Description and is it worth a visit
Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil is the main Hindu temple in Jaffna and northern Sri Lanka in general. It was founded in 948, but destroyed by the Portuguese in the 16th century, and fully rebuilt only in the 18th. There is an opinion that it was originally founded as a Buddhist temple, but local believers categorically refuse to recognize this.
The territory of the temple is large, includes several buildings and an open area. Tourists can safely move around the temple and inspect it, go inside, but inside the temple building you can not take pictures. At the entrance to the territory you will need to take off your shoes and then walk on the sand, which, by the way, can be very hot. In the temple and on the territory there are always a lot of believers, rituals are held. This is probably the first temple worth visiting in Jaffna.
The temple has its own website http://nalluran.com, where information about events (religious holidays) is published.
