There is no fundamental difference in this, since the road passes very close, it is enough to cross it, and you will find yourself on the beach. True, in some places the building is so dense that you still have to look for a passage to the beach. Well, you also need to understand that this is a fairly busy A2 highway connecting Colombo and Galle, and you need to cross it with caution.

Hikkaduwa Beaches

Although Hikkaduwa is known primarily as a beach resort, in fact, the beaches and the sea here are more suitable for surfers than lovers of swimming in calm water. Almost always, especially in the summer, there are waves. Of course, everything is not so bad and if you want to swim you can at any time, it just will not be so comfortable.

However, in the northern part of the resort (in fact, this is the city center, near the bus station and railway station) there is a small bay of the Hikkaduwa National Park, aka Hikaduwa Beach or Hikaduwa Coral Reef. It is protected by coral reefs, strong waves do not happen here. Therefore, if the presence of waves fundamentally hinders you (for example, holidays with children), it is better to stay in this part of the resort (Hikkaduwa Beach on the map), or even look for another place to stay, for example, go to Unawatuna.

In general, the beaches in Hikkaduwa stretch along the entire resort area, and continue far beyond it to the North and South. As befits the laws of the genre, where there are a lot of people and infrastructure is developing, initially beautiful pristine beaches turn into a dull coastal strip. Hikkaduwa is no exception, and as it develops and grows in popularity, hotel and restaurant buildings are stepping more and more onto the beach. If in the south of the resort area the beach is still a fairly cozy and wide strip of sand (this beach is called Narigama, cm. Narigama on the map), then closer to the center (this area is called Wewala, see Wewala on the map), the strip of sand Narrows, and in other places disappears.

Given all of the above, we would recommend choosing a place for a hotel and vacation closer to the southern beach of Naigama. But you need to be ready for strong waves. If you want to find an almost perfect beach, then you need to go look for one outside the resort area. Both in the North and in the south there are many wonderful and deserted beaches with hotels. But there is almost no infrastructure there, so you have to choose: either settle on a wonderful beach outside Hikkaduwa in the wilderness, or settle in the center and be content with the available beaches, and go to good beaches during the day.
