Which Beach to Choose on Langkawi – Comparing Pantai Cenang and Pantai Tengah

Article and Section Navigation

Langkawi doesn't have that many developed tourist areas and beaches, or rather there are just two: Pantai Cenang and Pantai Tengah. Only here you'll find plenty of budget-friendly hotels, and you can rent a house or room for a long period. Only here is there any kind of evening activity, and places to hang out or go in the evening outside your hotel grounds. That's why most tourists, especially those on a tighter budget, face the question of which of these beaches to choose for their vacation. We'll try to help you decide by looking at each beach in detail.

Pantai Cenang

Pantai Cenang Beach

This is the most developed tourist area on Langkawi (Pantai Cenang on the map). There are many hotels and budget accommodations, lots of cafes and restaurants along the main street, and even some bars with music. Besides relaxing on the beach, you can visit the Cenang Mall during the day. There are also numerous travel agencies along the main street where you can book island tours.

How to Get to Cenang

Cenang is located just five kilometers from Langkawi Airport. You can get here by taxi or rent a vehicle at the airport. The most cost-effective option is to book a Grab (similar to Uber). The price for a trip on the saver tariff starts from 20 ringgit (4.9 USD), but usually, depending on demand and time of day, it's 30–35 ringgit (7.35 USD). An official taxi (the painted minivans) will be more expensive — about one and a half times more.

If you arrive at Kuah Jetty, Grab also works: the trip to Cenang takes 20–30 minutes and costs from 25 ringgit (6.13 USD). Read more about transport in the article Transport on Langkawi.

Where to Stay in Cenang

Cenang offers the widest choice of accommodation on the island: from budget guesthouses (from 100–150 ringgit per night) to expensive chain hotels with their own pools and beach access. If you're looking for peace and quiet, pay attention to the left part of the beach (past the aquarium towards Tengah) — it's much quieter there, and you can easily walk to the central, more active area in 10 minutes. If you need all the infrastructure right on your doorstep, choose hotels in the right part, where the main cafes, bars, and water sports rentals are concentrated.

Beach and Activities

Cenang beach itself is about two kilometers long with a very wide sandy strip. The sand is fine, but the water is often murky due to sediment. The beach offers the full range of water activities: banana boats, jet skis, parasailing, etc. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available for rent at 10 ringgit (2.45 USD). A downside of the beach is the large number of people and the constant movement of boats and jet skis along the shore, which sometimes results in a smell of diesel fuel. If you go a bit further from the center of the area northwards, there are fewer people.

Prices for water activities (you can and should bargain on the spot, a 10–20% discount is realistic):

Water Sports Prices at Pantai Cenang Beach
Activity Price (RM) Price (in USD)
Jet ski, 15 min 150 36.75 USD.
Jet ski, 30 min 200 49 USD.
Large jet ski for 4 people 180 44.1 USD.
Banana boat (1–5 people) 150 36.75 USD.
Donut boat (5 people) 200 49 USD.
Parasailing (per person) 250 61.25 USD.
Wakeboarding 200 49 USD.
Jet safari to 4 spots (per jet ski) from 650 from 159 USD.

Evening Life

In the evening, the beach gets lively: music plays, and sometimes fire shows are performed. There are a couple of beach bars where you can have a beer or a cocktail. Prices there are quite high: a small can of beer starts from 28 ringgit (6.86 USD), cocktails from 50 ringgit (12.25 USD). The atmosphere in these places is usually friendly, with many foreign tourists. However, after 9:00 PM, everything quiets down, and the beach becomes almost deserted.

Pros and Cons of Cenang

Pros: wide sandy strip, great sunsets, developed infrastructure, wide choice of accommodation and activities, always lively and crowded.

Cons: murky water, constant movement of boats and jet skis close to shore, occasional smell of diesel, high prices at beach bars.

Our verdict on Cenang: Whatever the beach is like, Pantai Cenang is the most convenient area to stay on Langkawi. It's here that a decent beach, excellent tourist infrastructure, and plenty of duty-free shops are all concentrated in one place. If you value activities and don't mind the hustle and bustle, choose Cenang.

Pantai Tengah

Pantai Tengah Beach

Pantai Tengah adjoins Cenang, practically continuing after it, but you can't walk from one beach to the other as they are separated by a rocky headland (Pantai Tengah on the map). The Tengah area is much quieter and calmer, and in the evening, it's completely silent on the street. There are also cafes and restaurants along the main road, but they all close early, and there are no late-night establishments. There are no shops or malls either, just stalls with street food and fresh fruit.

How to Get to Tengah

The easiest way to get to Tengah is by taxi. From Langkawi Airport, you can book a Grab: the trip costs from 20 ringgit (4.9 USD), usually 30–35 ringgit (7.35 USD). An official taxi will be more expensive. From Kuah Jetty, a Grab trip takes 20–30 minutes and costs from 25 ringgit (6.13 USD).

Where to Stay in Tengah

Tengah offers both budget guesthouses and mid-range hotels. The main advantage is the peaceful atmosphere. If you're looking for seclusion, pay attention to the southern part of the beach (lower on the map). There, you'll find hotels with their own grounds and direct beach access, often with lower prices than similar options in Cenang. If you need all the infrastructure close by, choose hotels in the northern part, closer to Cenang. From there, you can easily walk to the livelier area in 10–15 minutes.

Beach and Activities

The beach itself is just over 1 kilometer long and quite wide, but not as wide as Cenang. However, there are far fewer people here. The seabed slope is steeper than at Cenang, and the effect of tides and waves is less. The sand is coarse in some places, with black sand patches appearing here and there. Unfortunately, it's not cleaned as well as at Cenang, with some litter remaining in places. Activities on the beach are also available but less numerous, and many close down in the low season. Prices for water activities are the same as at Cenang (see table above).

Evening Life

Evening life in Tengah is significantly calmer than in Cenang. There are a few cozy beach bars and restaurants where you can have a cocktail or dinner with the sound of the waves. Prices here are slightly lower than on the neighboring beach. After 8:00 PM, it becomes very quiet here, which is ideal for a relaxing getaway.

Pros and Cons of Tengah

Pros: peaceful atmosphere, fewer people, good choice of hotels with beach access, proximity to Cenang's developed infrastructure, beautiful sunsets.

Cons: less thorough cleaning (litter found in places), sand is coarse and black in patches, fewer shops and cafes than in Cenang.

Our verdict on Tengah: The perfect option if you want a combination of a relaxing stay close to a developed tourist center. A 20–30 minute walk (or 8 ringgit by taxi) — and you're right next to the mall, markets, and cafes of Cenang.

Useful Tips

  • If you want a quiet stay in Cenang, stay in the left part of the beach (past the aquarium) or on the right edge, where the beach is almost deserted.
  • Always bargain when booking water activities — a discount is almost always possible.
  • For trips around the island, use Grab — it's cheaper than local taxis.
  • Keep in mind that the water on both beaches is often murky; if you want to swim in clear water, plan an Island Hopping tour or a trip to Tanjung Rhu beach.
  • Evening entertainment ends early, so it's best to come for sunset if you want some atmosphere.
