Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 islands, but tourists usually go to the main island of the same name. It is located in the northwest of Malaysia, near the border with Thailand. You can't get here directly from Moscow: there are no direct flights. But there are options, and they are quite affordable by Southeast Asia standards, if you know how to search and how to plan your routes properly. We've been to Langkawi several times and will tell you how to plan your route with minimal time and money.
Quick answer: the best way is by plane with a connection
You need to fly from Moscow to Langkawi with one or two connections. The most convenient is via Kuala Lumpur (the capital of Malaysia) — from there, local low-cost carriers AirAsia, Firefly, and Malaysia Airlines fly to the island. Alternative connections: Istanbul, Doha, Dubai, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore. Travel time — from 16 hours including layovers. This is faster, easier, and most often cheaper than combined routes through Thailand or land transport.

By Plane
Langkawi Airport (LGK) is small but modern. It receives flights from Kuala Lumpur (KLIA and Subang), Penang, Singapore, as well as seasonal flights from China, Thailand, the UAE, and India. But there are no direct flights from Moscow (although negotiations about this have been going on for many years), so you'll have to fly with a connection via a complex route.
Optimal Route Plan
The most popular and convenient route is via Kuala Lumpur. Turkish Airlines (via Istanbul), Qatar Airways (via Doha), Emirates (via Dubai), China Southern (via Guangzhou), and others fly from Moscow to Kuala Lumpur. In Kuala Lumpur itself, you'll need to change terminals: international flights arrive at KLIA, while flights to Langkawi mostly depart from low-cost carriers at KLIA2 or from the old Subang Airport (SZB).
📌 And there's an important nuance for planning flights here: You won't find through tickets from Moscow to Langkawi on a single booking at reasonable prices. So, most often your route will look like this: Moscow → connection in a third country → Kuala Lumpur → Langkawi. To minimize risks during connections, which is especially relevant due to frequent airport closures in Russia, we recommend this algorithm:
-
Stage 1: Moscow – Kuala Lumpur
This ticket will have a connection (Istanbul, Doha, Dubai, Shanghai, Guangzhou, etc.). Buy it strictly as one ticket (meaning all flights to Kuala Lumpur are booked under one reservation). Then the airline is responsible for the connection in the intermediate city: if the first flight is delayed due to weather or Moscow airport closure, they will rebook you on the next one for free and get you to Kuala Lumpur. This saves a lot of stress.
-
Stage 2: Kuala Lumpur – Langkawi
This ticket is bought separately (most often it's local low-cost carriers AirAsia, Firefly, BatikAir). Here you are responsible for the connection yourself: you arrive in Kuala Lumpur — and then it's your task to catch your flight to Langkawi. So, allow at least 4–5 hours for this connection, especially if you need to change terminals (international flights arrive at KLIA, while flights to Langkawi mainly depart from KLIA2 or from the old Subang Airport).
A free bus and a paid train (2 ringgit) run between KLIA and KLIA2, taking about 10–15 minutes. To Subang Airport (SZB), it's about an hour by taxi, costing from 75 ringgit (18.38 USD). It doesn't seem long. But you will have to go through passport and customs control here, exchange or withdraw money, find your bearings and find the bus or train, and finally get to the other terminal and go through check-in again. Keep this in mind when buying tickets and don't hesitate to allow extra time — it's better to wait at the airport than to worry about being late.
To be even calmer, you could even plan an overnight stay in Kuala Lumpur — then if you're late, your ticket to Langkawi won't be lost. But there are nuances here too:
- Pros: You won't lose money on the flight to Langkawi and you can exchange money in Kuala Lumpur at the best rate in the country — for example, at Mid Valley Megamall or in the Little India area.
- There are many more cons: You'll waste time and money getting to the city center (which is far); you'll have to pay for an extra night in a hotel; and you still might not make it for either the overnight stay or the flight if the delay is too long.
Which option is correct? Honestly, it's hard to give a definitive answer. Considering the low prices for domestic flights within Malaysia, on our last trip we weighed everything and decided that it would be better to buy a new ticket on the spot in case of a delay, rather than waste time and money on an overnight stay in Kuala Lumpur. But the choice is yours, of course.
Prices and Where to Search for Tickets

Prices for a ready-made Moscow — Langkawi round-trip flight start from 70,000 rubles in the low season. During the high-demand season, prices can jump to 80-100 thousand. And it's not guaranteed that this will be a ticket with baggage.
If you buy Moscow — Kuala Lumpur and Kuala Lumpur — Langkawi flights separately, but considering the connection nuances we mentioned above, it will be cheaper. Here are ticket collections by destination, you can check everything yourself:

Combined Routes
Sometimes travelers prefer not just to fly to Langkawi but to combine the route with sightseeing in other countries. The most popular options are via Thailand or with a land transfer from Kuala Lumpur. We'll tell you about them, but warn you right away: if your goal is specifically Langkawi, it's better to fly. Combined routes take more time and are not always cheaper.
Important: the route via Singapore won't work
Sometimes travelers mistakenly consider this option: fly to Singapore, use the 96-hour visa-free transit, then move to Malaysia and get to Langkawi by land. The scheme seems logical, but in practice it doesn't work. Visa-free transit in Singapore only applies when departing by air; it does not apply when exiting by land.
Via Thailand (Bangkok, Phuket, Islands)
You can fly from Moscow to Bangkok or Phuket (which is cheaper than to Kuala Lumpur), and then get to Langkawi by land and sea. There are two main routes:
- From Bangkok or the southern islands (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lipe): first, you need to get to Satun town (by bus or taxi), and from there take a ferry to Langkawi. The ferry from Satun runs once a day, costs about 450 baht (13.5 USD). Travel time — 1.5 hours. Read more about this route in the separate article How to Get to Langkawi from Thailand by Ferry.
- From Koh Lipe Island: during the high season (November to May), direct ferries run to Langkawi (Telaga Harbour port). The ticket costs about 1300 baht (39 USD), travel time 1.5–2 hours. This is an excellent option for those who want to combine two islands. But you need to understand that getting to Koh Lipe itself is also quite a quest. Details: How to Get to Langkawi from Koh Lipe and How to Get to Koh Lipe.
Via Kuala Lumpur by Land Transport
If you are already in Kuala Lumpur and want to save money (or just love trains), you can get to the ports on the mainland and then take a ferry to Langkawi. Options:
- Train + ferry: from KL Sentral train station to Alor Setar (Kuala Kedah port) or Arau (Kuala Perlis port). Travel time about 5-6 hours, train ticket from 73 ringgit (17.89 USD). Then ferry to Langkawi: from Kuala Kedah — 45 ringgit (11.03 USD, 1 hr 45 min), from Kuala Perlis — 35 ringgit (8.58 USD, 1 hr 15 min).
- Bus + ferry: from TBS bus station to Kuala Perlis. The bus takes about 7 hours, price from 55 ringgit (13.48 USD). The same ferry.
This option makes sense if you want to see rural Malaysia. But in terms of time and money, it often loses to the plane. Detailed schedules and tickets are in the article How to Get from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi.
What to Know Upon Arrival in Langkawi
You have arrived at Langkawi Airport (or disembarked at Kuah or Telaga Harbour port). What next? Let's go in order.
How to Get from Langkawi Airport to Your Hotel
The airport is located in the southwest of the island, about 10-20 minutes by car from the main beaches. There is no public transport, so choose:
- Official taxi: a counter at the terminal exit. You tell them your hotel, pay a fixed price, get a coupon, and go to the car. More expensive than Grab, but reliable and no surprises.
- Grab: the local Uber. Prices are 1.5-2 times lower. You need to download the app in advance (does it work with Russian cards? not always, but you can link a card or pay in cash).
- Pre-booked transfer: you book online, they meet you with a sign. Convenient if you arrive late or with children.
Money-saving life hack for Grab: Don't order a car immediately after landing, when everyone is just exiting — prices are highest. Wait 10–15 minutes, walk about 200 meters from the terminal towards the main road, and order from there. The price could drop by 20–30%. Also, choose the Grab Saver tariff.
| Destination | Official Taxi (MYR) | Grab (estimate, MYR) |
|---|---|---|
| Pantai Cenang | 25 | 15–18 |
| Pantai Tengah | 25 | 15–18 |
| Pantai Kok | 25 | 15–20 |
| Kuah Town | 45 | 25–30 |
| Kuah Jetty | 50 | 30–35 |
| Datai Bay | 60 | 40–45 |
| Tanjung Rhu Beach | 60 | 40–45 |
You can book an individual transfer in advance on these sites (work with Russian cards):
Currency Exchange, ATMs, and SIM Cards
💳 Currency exchange: There are several exchange offices in the airport arrivals hall. The rate here is acceptable — better than at Kuala Lumpur Airport, but slightly worse than in Kuah town. The best rate is usually at the SMJ exchange office. Old series US dollars may be exchanged at a bad rate or not at all.
💳 ATMs: Next to the exchange offices are Maybank and CIMB ATMs. They do not charge a fee for withdrawals from foreign cards (your bank's fee still applies). UnionPay cards work well.
📱 SIM cards: Right there are official Tune Talk and Hotlink mobile phone shops. Prices are the same as in town. A tourist SIM card for 30 days costs about 35 ringgit (8.58 USD).
Detailed money guides:
Renting a Car or Motorbike
The best way to explore the island is to rent transport right at the airport. This is often cheaper than renting on the beaches.
- Motorbike (scooter): At the airport, you can find one from 30 ringgit/day (7.35 USD) if booked in advance. On Cenang Beach, the minimum is 50. There are no stationary bike rental counters at the airport, but locals will approach you near the exit. It's cheaper to search on Google Maps and arrange delivery to the terminal.
- Car: At the airport, rental starts from 50 ringgit/day (12.25 USD). On Cenang — from 120. There are many rental counters in the arrivals hall.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Do Russians need a visa for Langkawi?
No, a visa is not required for tourist trips up to 30 days. However, you must fill out the electronic MDAC card in advance (no earlier than 3 days before entry). More details: All About Visas and Entry to Malaysia.
How long is the flight from Moscow to Langkawi?
Including connections — from 16 to 24 hours. The fastest connections are via Doha or Istanbul (about 16-18 hours including layover). Via Dubai or Guangzhou may be longer.
Which airlines fly from Moscow to Langkawi?
There are no direct flights. Connecting flights are offered by Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, Emirates, China Southern, Etihad, as well as Malaysian Malaysia Airlines (via Kuala Lumpur).
What's better: fly directly to Langkawi or take a land route via Thailand?
If your goal is only Langkawi — fly directly. A combined route via Thailand makes sense if you also want to see Phuket, Krabi, or the Andaman Sea islands. But keep in mind that this will take extra days and could end up being much more expensive.
Where is the best place to exchange money upon arrival in Langkawi?
The rate at Langkawi Airport is quite decent; we've only found better rates in Kuah town and at some exchange offices on Pantai Cenang beach. Do not exchange at Kuala Lumpur Airport — the rate there is terrible. You can simply withdraw ringgit from a Maybank or CIMB ATM (UnionPay cards work, no ATM fee).
