Description and Is It Worth Visiting

Eagle Square (Eagle Square or Dataran Lang) is the most recognizable landmark of Langkawi and the island's main architectural symbol. In the center of the square stands a majestic 12-meter tall statue of a reddish-brown eagle, poised for takeoff. The monument's height is comparable to a four-story building, and its wingspan is equally impressive. According to legend, the island was named after this bird — "Langkawi" translates from Malay as "reddish-brown eagle."

The square offers a great view of the sea, neighboring islands, and Kuah's main jetty, Jetty Point. The attraction itself doesn't require much time: people come here for 10–15 minutes to take photos in front of the symbol and admire the panorama. Nearby is a beautiful promenade and the Lagenda Langkawi thematic park, where you can stroll among sculptures and greenery. The jetty building houses a large duty-free shopping center, Jetty Point Mall, with numerous souvenir shops and cafes.

If you find yourself in Kuah, it's hard to miss the square — it's right in the center of the waterfront. Even if you hadn't planned to stop, the views from the water and the statue itself draw your eye. Leaving the island without a photo in front of the main eagle is almost a crime.

History of the Symbol

It is said that the name Langkawi comes from the words "helang" (eagle) and "kawi" (reddish-brown). According to local legend, such an eagle once soared over these lands. Dataran Lang Square was opened in 1996 as part of the island's tourism infrastructure development program. The architects chose the form of a soaring eagle intentionally — it symbolizes freedom, strength, and striving towards the future, reflecting the spirit of modern Malaysia. The statue is made of concrete and coated with a special paint that mimics feathers. Interestingly, the structure is designed to withstand strong winds and tropical downpours despite its huge wingspan.
