General information about the airport and flights

Airplane at Bali Airport

Bali's airport is called Denpasar Airport or Ngurah Rai (Bandar Udara Internasional Ngurah Rai). Its IATA code for searching for tickets is DPS.

This is the main and currently only airport on the island, the second most important and busiest in the country. There are projects to build a new airport in the north of the island, but for now all flights to Bali arrive here. It is located in the south of the island in the Kuta area, you could say in the very tourist heart of Bali (airport on the map).

Information for reference

Currently, there are no direct flights from Russia to Bali, although talks about resuming direct flights are constantly ongoing. However, this is not a problem at all, as you can fly here with connecting flights, and they are noticeably cheaper than direct ones. Moreover, direct flights are very long and tiring, up to 12 hours.

A connecting flight, although it takes more time overall, sometimes even more than a day, at least allows you to change the environment, stretch during the layover. Also, there are now excellent options from Chinese airlines with one or two connections in China and free transit hotels. Actually, in China you can now stay visa-free for up to 10 days, so during such a flight you can also get to know China. So that's what we're getting at: don't be afraid of connecting flights, and if you want to get to Bali, fly that way. Read more on the topic: Transit in China now 240 hours - what you need to know.

What to do and where to go upon arrival at Bali Airport

A visa is required to enter Indonesia and Bali. It can be arranged in advance online on the website - https://www.imigrasi.go.id/en/, but they do not accept Russian cards for payment. But you can easily get a visa at Bali Airport upon arrival.

We have prepared a detailed step-by-step guide for obtaining a visa and generally the entire procedure for passport and customs control at Bali Airport below:

Queue for obtaining a visa on arrival at Bali Airport
  • Immediately after disembarking from the plane, follow the signs for Arrival or just go where everyone is going.
  • You will enter a hall before passport (immigration) control, at the counters where the visa on arrival is processed. Usually there are long queues at these counters, but you'll have to wait to pay for the visa. The processing itself takes only a few minutes, but you might wait 20-40 minutes in line.
  • The visa is paid only in cash in local currency, dollars, or euros. Cards and e-wallets are not accepted!!! There is no place to exchange foreign currency for local rupiah here, and no ATMs either. So if you don't have local rupiah left from previous trips, the only option is dollars or euros. Important! Old-style dollars without a security strip are categorically not accepted! If you couldn't buy such dollars at Russian banks, then buy euros; they are accepted without problems.
  • The visa cost is announced in rupiah – 500,000 rupiah (27.55 rub. or 27.55 USD). Plus a small additional processing fee is charged – 13,500 rupiah. They will immediately tell you how much that will be in dollars or euros at the current rate.
  • Change will be given in local currency. The conversion is done at a not very favorable rate, so minimize the amount of change. For example, for one person it's better to pay with a 50-dollar bill, for two with a 100-dollar bill. And if you have small bills, it's better to pay with them.
  • At the same counter, you will be given a tablet to enter a valid email address. Enter it carefully to avoid mistakes, as that's where the electronic visa will be sent. After that, just wait for your passport to be returned and they'll tell you everything is ready. This takes a few minutes.
  • You will receive the electronic visa itself almost instantly in your email, but you don't need to show it to anyone; all your data will already be in the electronic system. After that, you can confidently proceed to the automatic or regular passport control counters.
  • If you have a new 10-year passport, go to the automatic turnstile counters. There you simply need to scan your passport and pass through the turnstile. No stamps are needed after the automatic turnstiles, and you can proceed directly to customs control.
  • To pass customs control, you need to fill out an electronic customs declaration BC2.2 on the website https://ecd.beacukai.go.id/. It's more convenient to do this at home, but if you didn't or forgot, there are computers at the airport for filling it out. Filling out BC2.2 takes just a few minutes; you'll receive a QR code, which you then take to customs control. There they will scan your QR code and let you through, directing you to the exit or to selective customs inspection of baggage and hand luggage.
  • After passing through customs, you will enter the arrivals hall with currency exchange, ATMs, SIM card sales, taxis. So essentially, you are already in Indonesia here and can proceed wherever you want.

Airport layout and infrastructure

International terminal

The airport consists of two separate terminals: international and domestic flights. They are located next to each other; you can easily get from one to the other via a walkway in a few minutes. But note that the exits from the terminals are in different places, if you're ordering a taxi for a trip from or to the airport.

The departure area and check-in counters in the international terminal are on the second floor; upon arrival, you enter the first floor.

The terminals have everything you need: currency exchange, SIM card purchase, taxi counters, restaurants and cafes, free WiFi, charging stations. The international terminal has duty-free shops upon arrival and departure.

Important! We remind you again! Currency exchange and ATMs are only located after the visa issuance area, after passport and customs control. Therefore, don't forget to bring cash currency to pay for the visa upon arrival. Old dollars are not accepted for it, so bring new-style dollars or euros.

If you need to leave items for storage, there is a storage room on the second floor (Departure area) in the international terminal. The cost per day is 70,000 (3.86 USD) and 105,000 (5.78 USD) depending on size.

Baggage wrapping upon departure costs 220,000 rupiah (12.12 USD), payment only by foreign bank card.

In the departure waiting area, there are very comfortable sun loungers where you can rest before departure.

  • Currency exchange at the airport, ATMs

    Currency exchange at Bali Airport

Currency exchange offices at the airport operate 24/7, at least in the international terminal. You'll find them in the arrivals area, but only after passing through passport control and customs.

The currency exchange rate isn't terribly "bad," as is usually the case in Russian airports, but there is still a difference compared to the city. We compared the rates in the city and at the airport on the same day:

    • At the airport - 15,300 rupiah per US dollar
    • At city exchange offices and banks - 15,875 rupiah per US dollar

So the difference between the airport and the street is - 3.6%

So you shouldn't exchange the main amount of money here, only what you need to buy a SIM card and get to your accommodation, and exchange the rest in the city. By the way, you don't even have to exchange currency at the airport; you can use the change from purchasing the visa. The thing is, the visa is purchased in local currency, or dollars or euros. If you pay with dollars or euros, change will be given in local currency. The conversion rate at the visa payment counter is lower than at exchange offices, but you simply won't have a choice there, as there are no exchange offices in the visa payment area. So if you don't have local currency left from previous trips, you'll have to pay with dollars or euros anyway.

Just note that if your hotel is located somewhere in remote areas away from tourist districts, the rate there may not be higher than at the airport. In that case, you can exchange money at this exchange office near the airport.

There are also ATMs here, including those that work with UnionPay cards from non-sanctioned banks like RSHB and ATB. But we wouldn't advise relying solely on a bank card, as they can stop working at any time, so have a cash reserve. ATMs are located in the arrivals area after passing customs, so you won't be able to withdraw money with a card and pay for the visa in local currency.

There is also currency exchange in the departure area, at least one exchange office where you can exchange local currency for dollars, euros, and others. But we really didn't like the exchange rate there. But, by the way, here you can spend leftover rupiah in the duty-free shop.

Currency exchange in the departure area at Bali Airport is also available
  • Buying a SIM card at the airport

SIM card sales counters at Bali Airport

Ready-made tourist SIM card packages are sold at the airport. Price from 250,000 rupiah (13.77 USD) for a package with 20-30 real gigabytes. Even if the counter says the package includes 100GB, the actual amount will be much less, as it also includes traffic only for local apps, only for local websites, only for social networks, etc. If you don't urgently need connectivity, you can buy a SIM card in the city at mobile phone shops and outlets for almost half the price, and purchasing at an official mobile phone store will cost about 4 times less. More details about mobile connectivity and where to buy a SIM card are explained in this guide.

  • Connecting to WiFi at the airport

Free WiFi network operates at Bali Airport, so immediately after arrival you can connect to it without problems in the arrivals hall and even before passport control, to send a message to family about a successful arrival, to order a taxi through Grab, GoJek apps, etc. WiFi is also available in the departure hall.

To connect, you don't need to enter any data and no SMS authorization is required. Simply connect to the public network @NgurahRaiAirport, and on the authorization page click the Continue button, see screenshots below. There are no time limits for connection, but sometimes the network "drops" and you have to reconnect in advance.

How to get from Bali Airport to the hotel and resorts

The airport is very conveniently located in the very tourist center of the island in the Kuta area, and upon exiting the terminal you will find yourself on the streets of this district. If you're traveling with a backpack, you can even walk to the nearest hotels. This is really convenient if you need to rest before or after the flight, acclimatize a bit, exchange money, buy a SIM card, and so on, and then go further. Just be prepared to pass through a "blockade" of touts and taxi drivers on your way to the airport exit, who are very pushy in offering their services.

By the way, the exit from the airport here is very intricate; you'll have to cross several roadways via pedestrian crossings and walk along a sidewalk under an awning. Here is the exit point from the airport on the map.

If you want to get to your accommodation immediately, you can use a taxi or tourist transfer; unfortunately, there are no other options:

Taxi from Bali Airport
  • Taxi

Taxis can be ordered at the counter in the arrivals terminal (this is a fixed-price ride to your hotel), through apps, or by negotiating with drivers who will pester you immediately upon entering the arrivals hall.

Let's start with the touts and negotiated taxis, this is important! Overpricing is very common here, for which the tout drivers behave very pushily and even aggressively. They can easily quote a price 2-3 times higher than the official or metered rate, so you need to bargain with them. You can follow a reliable scheme: check the price to your hotel at the official counter (it's determined by district, prices are given below) and through a taxi app, and then bargain with them below that price. But in reality, this only makes sense for trips to distant beaches, for example to Ubud, Sanur, Nusa Dua, Canggu. For short trips to central Kuta, Legian or Seminyak, there's no point in bargaining with them: you'll just waste time, and they are unlikely to agree to go below the fixed price.

Taxi at the counter at the airport in the arrivals hall is a good and reliable option if you don't want to bargain or aren't familiar with the resorts. There you'll state the hotel name, the counter will determine the district for you, and tell you the price. You pay for the ride in cash at the hotel doors at the end.

Here are approximate fixed-price taxi rates by district, if you're familiar with the resort geography:

    • Kuta (nearby district), Jimbaran (nearby district) - from 120,000 rupiah / 6.61 USD.
    • Kuta (center), Jimbaran (center), Legian, Seminyak - 150,000 rupiah / 8.26 USD.
    • Denpasar - 180,000 rupiah / 9.92 USD.
    • Sanur, Nusa Dua, Tanjung Benoa - 200,000 rupiah / 11.02 USD.
    • Canggu - 310,000 rupiah / 17.08 USD.
    • Ubud - 360,000 rupiah / 19.83 USD.
    • Padangbai (ferries to Lombok, Gili Islands, Nusa Penida), Candidasa - 450,000 rupiah / 24.79 USD.
    • Lovina (north of the island) - 650,000 rupiah / 35.81 USD.
    • Gilimanuk (west of the island, ferry to Java) - 850,000 rupiah / 46.83 USD.

Taxis through apps are suitable if you are an advanced traveler and gadget user. And usually this is the most profitable option. Apps like Grab, GoJek, Maxim, InDriver work here; you can order a car or motorbike taxi through them. Uber does not work here.

But an important point: motorbike taxis do not pull up directly to the terminal exit; you'll have to walk about 100 meters to the pickup point to the left after exiting (pickup point on the map). Upon exiting the international terminal, there is a Grab Lounge office where you can order a taxi without the app and internet on your smartphone. To find it, ask staff "Grab lounge" or "Gojek," they will direct you.

    Sign for GoJek taxi

Just note that taxi drivers here are very "shifty"; legends could be made about them. Similar to other airports in Asia, upon exit you will also be met by touts waving smartphones, claiming they work through apps and will take you for the Grab price. But in fact, they ask for 2-3 times more, so you need to at least agree on the price before the ride and bargain.

You can install all four apps to compare prices in them, or limit yourself to a couple of your choice. More about these taxis we explained in our guide about transport in Bali, read it and you'll be able to choose.

To order, you can use the free airport WiFi or buy a SIM card at the airport (see above about SIM cards). Also, upon exiting the international terminal, there is a Grab Lounge where they can help you order a Grab taxi.

Here are approximate prices for reference for cars and motorbike taxis via apps to major tourist areas:

    • Kuta (nearby district), Jimbaran (nearby district) - from 120,000 rupiah / 6.61 USD.
    • Kuta (center), Jimbaran (center), Legian, Seminyak 150,000 - rupiah / 8.26 USD.
    • Denpasar - 180,000 rupiah / 9.92 USD.
    • Sanur, Nusa Dua, Tanjung Benoa - 200,000 rupiah / 11.02 USD.
    • Canggu - 310,000 rupiah / 17.08 USD.
    • Ubud - 360,000 rupiah / 19.83 USD.
    • Padangbai (ferries to Lombok, Gili, Nusa Penida), Candidasa - 450,000 rupiah / 24.79 USD.
    • Lovina (north of the island) - 650,000 rupiah / 35.81 USD.
    • Gilimanuk (west of the island, ferry to Java) - 850,000 rupiah / 46.83 USD.

These are real prices, but they can change significantly depending on the time of day due to dynamic pricing.

  • Tourist transfer

A tourist transfer is almost the same as a taxi ordered at the counter upon arrival at a fixed price. But the difference is that you can order it in advance online and even pay with a Russian bank card, and upon arrival a driver will meet you with a sign and take you to the hotel. This option is suitable for you if you don't have enough experience traveling independently, don't know English well enough to figure out taxis on your own, or if you simply prefer comfort.

You can order a transfer online on many websites and even through private Telegram chats. And here are known aggregator sites for ordering transfers with a Russian language interface:
