Hello again, independent travelers! After our previous comparison of Pyatigorsk and Kislovodsk, you might be wondering – what about Zheleznovodsk? Today we'll take a detailed look at how the largest resort in the CMW differs from the most intimate and cozy one. Both cities have their own special atmosphere and purpose, so let's figure it out!
The short answer is this:
- Pyatigorsk – for those who want everything at once: treatment, excursions, city life, and affordable prices
- Zheleznovodsk – for those who appreciate seclusion, peaceful medical treatment, and a beach resort in the mountains (yes, don't be surprised, Zheleznovodsk has beach relaxation in summer)
General Comparison: Atmosphere and Scale
Pyatigorsk is a full-fledged city with a population of about 150,000 people, the largest of all the CMW resorts. When we walk around here, you can feel real city life – busy streets, developed infrastructure, many shops and cafes. There is both a resort area and regular city districts where locals live.
Honestly, after visiting other CMW resorts, we noticed a contrast in the level of improvement. The central Tsvetnik Park and Kirov Avenue look well-maintained, but as soon as you step aside, you see broken sidewalks. Nevertheless, it is in Pyatigorsk that you feel a rich history – Lermontov-related places, old mansions, the spirit of a real 19th-century Caucasian resort.
Zheleznovodsk is a completely different story. A small town with a population of less than 25,000 people, which feels more like a cozy spa village than a city. When we arrived here after noisy Pyatigorsk, we were struck by the silence and tranquility. There's no hustle and bustle, no traffic jams, no crowds of tourists.
But it's worth noting objectively that Zheleznovodsk struggled through the post-Soviet transition crisis and only began to recover around the early 2000s. So don't expect too much from it in terms of tourism. There's no developed tourist infrastructure, abundance of entertainment, cafes, or restaurants.
Treatment and Mineral Waters

Pyatigorsk: Diversity of Springs
Drinking spring in Pyatigorsk
Lake Tambukan Pyatigorsk is famous for its diversity of mineral waters – there are over 40 springs with different chemical compositions. A special feature is the presence of unique radon springs and access to the famous therapeutic mud of Lake Tambukan. We tried water from different springs – each has its own unique taste and healing properties.
What is especially valuable for independent travelers is that there are free springs like the famous Shameless Baths, where you can take procedures completely free of charge. True, there's not much comfort there, but it's authentic and down-to-earth.

Zheleznovodsk: Healing Waters of Slavyanovskaya and Smirnovskaya
Slavyanovsky healing spring
Smirnovsky Spring Zheleznovodsk is the birthplace of the famous mineral waters "Slavyanovskaya" and "Smirnovskaya," known throughout Russia. This is where the very springs are located, the water from which you can buy in stores across the country. When we tried the water straight from the source – we could taste the difference! It's truly special.
Thanks to the presence of unique mineral springs, clean air, and a very peaceful environment, Zheleznovodsk is definitely one of the best places for sanatorium treatment. Local sanatoriums specialize in diseases of the digestive system, kidneys, urinary tract, and metabolic disorders.
Attractions and Entertainment
-
Pyatigorsk: The Cultural Capital of the CMW
Tsvetnik Park
Cable car Pyatigorsk is the undisputed leader in the number and variety of attractions. Just to see all the iconic places, you need at least 3-4 days:
Be sure to take the cable car up Mount Mashuk, visit Proval Lake (the one from "The Twelve Chairs"), stroll through Tsvetnik Park and the Lermontov Gallery, and see the places associated with Lermontov. For active tourists – climbing Mount Beshtau, for history lovers – numerous museums and architectural monuments.
When we explored Pyatigorsk, we discovered something new every day. The city is ideal for those who love walking and a packed sightseeing program.

Zheleznovodsk: Nature and Seclusion
Cascade Staircase
Kurortnoe Lake Zheleznovodsk offers a completely different type of vacation. Here, the main attraction is nature and peace. The Resort Park with its therapeutic trails (terrenkurs), the Cascade Staircase, walks to Mount Zheleznaya – these are what visitors to the city do.
But there is one feature that makes Zheleznovodsk unique among all the CMW resorts! This is the magnificent Kurortnoe Lake with a well-equipped beach area. When we saw this beach with free sun loungers, sports facilities, and the opportunity to swim, we were pleasantly surprised. This is generally the only place in all the CMW resorts where you can fully sunbathe and swim.
As for entertainment – there is practically none in Zheleznovodsk. In the evening, besides walking in the park, there's nothing to do. But for many, this is the main advantage – a true escape from the city bustle.
But it's worth noting that your trip shouldn't be limited to just exploring the city's attractions. Both resorts serve as excellent starting points for exploring the entire North Caucasus. From here, you can go to the foot of majestic Elbrus and even walk on snow in the middle of summer, take an excursion to modern Grozny, see the stunningly beautiful mountain regions of Dagestan, or visit mysterious Ossetia. And these are far from all the options!
What is especially convenient is that excursion programs are offered equally in both Pyatigorsk and Zheleznovodsk. We saw the same offers from vendors in Tsvetnik Park in Pyatigorsk and on the resort boulevard in Kislovodsk. Prices and programs are practically the same, so there really is no clear leader in this matter.
Infrastructure and Transport
Pyatigorsk is a large city with developed infrastructure. It has everything: shopping centers, markets, many cafes and restaurants, cinemas, bowling. Public transport is represented by buses and trams; you can easily catch a taxi or use car sharing.
Tourist infrastructure is concentrated in the city center – around Tsvetnik Park and Kirov Avenue. There are always many tourists here, excursion bureaus, and souvenir shops. But honestly, outside the tourist center, the city doesn't look as presentable.
Zheleznovodsk is much more modest in this regard. The resort area is compact, and you're unlikely to need transport to get around it. On foot, from almost any point in this area, you can reach the Resort Park, the Cascade Staircase, or Kurortnoe Lake in 10-30 minutes.
Infrastructure is mainly concentrated on the territories of the sanatoriums; outside them, there's almost nothing: few cafes and restaurants, almost no shops. As we noticed, most of the vacationers here are elderly people and enterprise workers improving their health with trade union vouchers.
