What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting

Cascading stairs is an original architectural monument, one of the main attractions of Kislovodsk is located on the territory of Kislovodsk National Park. In the 30s of the last century, according to the plan for the expansion of the national park and its arrangement, Colonnade was built. However, the composition was not completed from an architectural point of view, and therefore in 1934 the city authorities signed a project to build a massive staircase. Architects K. A. Shevchuk and L. Zalesskaya create a plan for the future composition, taking into account the terrain and nearby architecture. In 1934, after the approval of the project, construction work began, and just a year later, in 1935, the grand opening of the staircase in classical antique style took place.

Unfortunately, the years, the climate and the human factor have negatively affected the appearance of the cascade staircase. The steps began to collapse, rust appeared on the fittings, and the pools of the fountains were littered with garbage. In order to preserve the pride of Kislovodsk and restore its historical appearance, a large-scale reconstruction was carried out. The works were completed, and in 2015 the grand opening of the renovated staircase and one of the city's brightest sights took place. It is noteworthy that during the reconstruction the historical image of the staircase was completely preserved, and therefore today you can see it the same as almost a hundred years ago.

The staircase is two-sided, the length of each is 170 degrees, the height difference between the lower and upper points is about 20 meters, which roughly corresponds to 8 floors. In the middle of the climb there is a small terrace paved with tiles. During city events and celebrations, it serves as a stage. In the lower part there are two inclined parts, they are a kind of "dividing strip". Fountains with a round bowl are installed on each of the tiers. And at the very top, the staircase ends with a colonnade with an observation deck overlooking the northern part of the city.

Thuja trees are planted all around the perimeter, they create a kind of natural shade. Benches for vacationers are located across the span on both sides of the stairs. The staircase itself is beautiful, the whole area is well-groomed, with the onset of the evening the light turns on. Here you get beautiful photos against the backdrop of a picturesque neighborhood.

But there are also disadvantages, the main drawback is that there are completely no options for people with disabilities. The lack of ramps also inconveniences holidaymakers with children. There is a road on the left side, but it is only up to the ice cream stand. It is difficult to carry a baby stroller along the laid paving stones.

On the upper part of the road leading from the sanatorium, there is a barely noticeable sign about prohibited parking. Many vacationers do not notice it, as a result, the car is picked up by a tow truck, and local taxi drivers increase the cost three times to the parking lot.
