The small chapel of the New Martyrs in Yalta is one of the recognizable tourist symbols of the resort and an important landmark. It is located on the central embankment and is visible from almost any point of it. It often serves as a kind of landmark for walks and meetings. Anyone can not only inspect it from the outside, but also visit it from the inside, and if desired, put a candle.
The chapel was built in memory of Emperor Alexander II, who earned the respect of people for the abolition of serfdom and victory in the Russian-Turkish War (1877-1878). After the death of the emperor in 1881, a wooden chapel was installed on the embankment, which stood for more than 50 years. In 1932, it was dismantled in connection with the state's policy of banning religion.
In 2009, with donations from local residents, the Chapel of the New Martyrs and Confessors of the Russian Church again took its place of honor on the embankment. At the same time, today they pray not only for Alexander II, but also for those who died in subsequent years during various wars, as well as in memory of the victims of the Armenia motor ship that sank near the coast of Yalta. This ship was hit by German torpedoes in September 1941, as a result of which, according to some sources, about 10 thousand people died.
