What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting

Bakal spit
Bakal spit

Bakal spit is one of the most picturesque and little–visited tourist attractions of the Crimea. This natural object is a narrow sandy strip that separates the Bakal Lake (estuary) from the Black Sea. The spit stretches for several kilometers, creating a unique landscape that attracts tourists with its beauty, privacy and the opportunity to enjoy wildlife.

The place is really interesting and attractive for lovers of wild recreation, and due to its remoteness from the main tourist resorts of the Crimea, it is also a great place for a secluded holiday. After all, it is located far to the north-east of the Crimean peninsula, it is almost wild and steppe places. But you will have to rest on the spit in Spartan conditions: in your tent or in a campsite. But it's not a fact that the campsite will work, at least in the 2024 season, when we visited it, the campsite was in a neglected, half-abandoned state, did not receive guests. Another option to visit the Bakal spit is simply to come here to relax for a day from the neighboring Steregushchee resort (it's only a couple of kilometers), or from the more distant resorts Mezhvodnoye or Chernomorskoye. There is no point in coming here from more distant places for one day, because, to be honest, you will not see any wonderful landscapes here, and most likely you will leave disappointed.

What is interesting about the Bakal spit and why go here

  • Natural uniqueness

The Bakal Spit is a protected area that is part of the Bakal Spit Regional landscape Park. Almost untouched nature has been preserved here: sandy beaches, shallow water, a salt lake and a rich wildlife. The spit is a habitat for many birds, including rare species listed in the Red Book. This makes it especially interesting for ornithologists and bird lovers.

  • Beach holidays

The Bakal spit is famous for its wide sandy beaches, which are considered one of the best in the Crimea. The shallow water near the shore is ideal for families with children, and clean water and the absence of large resort complexes create a sense of privacy. The beaches here are sparsely populated even at the height of the season, which makes Kos a great place for those who want to avoid the noise and crowds of tourists.

  • Therapeutic mud of the Bakal lake

Near the spit is the Bakal lake (estuary), known for its healing mud and high concentration of salt. The mud of the lake is used to treat skin diseases, joint diseases and other ailments. Tourists often come here not only for a beach holiday, but also to improve their health.

  • Fishing

The Bakal spit is also a good place for fishing. Mullet, gobies, flounder are found in the coastal waters of the Black Sea.

  • Photo shoots and romantic walks

The Bakal spit is a place where you can take amazing photos. The combination of sea, sand, lake and wildlife creates unique landscapes, especially beautiful at sunset. Many tourists come here especially for photo shoots or romantic walks.

  • Privacy and silence

Unlike the popular resorts of the Crimea, such as Yalta or Yevpatoria, the Bakal spit remains a quiet and peaceful place. There are no noisy entertainment, large hotels and crowds of tourists. This is an ideal place for those who want to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy nature.

🚶 How to get there

Bakalskaya spit is located in the north of Crimea in Razdolnensky district, 150 km from Simferopol and 80 km from Yevpatoria, nearby is the resort village Steregushchee (Bakal spit on the map). It is best to get here by car, because these places are a little "wild", and in general this northern part of Crimea is sparsely populated, public transport is poorly developed, there are no taxis. In addition, it is best to relax on the spit with all your equipment, food and water, because there is no infrastructure here.

A good asphalt road leads through the entire spit at a distance of about 200 meters from the shore. You can drive along it to the very extreme point, it will take you to the beach, where you can not swim. A lot of exits to the beaches will be on the right side along the way, there are many dirt roads leading to the shore. True, everything here is dotted with canals with water, the places are swampy, and you will have to twist a little before you get to the beach. Be careful here: you can easily get stuck without knowing the way. Well, do not forget that according to the law, the water protection zone from the seashore is 500 meters, so if you park your car on the beach, you can theoretically get a fine for violating the Water Code of the Russian Federation.

If you are staying for a rest in the village of Steregushchee, then you can get to the beginning of the spit on foot, just a couple of kilometers, but to get to the extreme point, you will have to walk or drive 7 kilometers. In turn, if you really want, you can get to the Guard by taxi or bus from Simferopol and Yevpatoria, we told you about this in detail in the Steregushchee guide here.
