RT-22 Radio telescope of Simeiz Observatory
RT-22 Radio telescope of Simeiz Observatory

The large radio antenna of the RT-22 radio telescope of the Simeiz Observatory, which in turn is part of the large Crimean Astrophysical Observatory, is located in the village of Blue Bay (Katsiveli) on the beach, which is known to vacationers as the beach under the telescope. This impressive structure is unlikely to be of interest to an ordinary tourist, but if you are at least a little interested in technology, astronomy or scientific research, then you will undoubtedly explore this object with interest.

This model of radio telescope is called RT-22, which means the diameter of its mirror is 22 meters. It was built in 1967, and was the best at that time, and remains one of the most advanced today. With its help, a number of first-class scientific results have been obtained - from the study of the active nuclei of galaxies and objects of the Solar system, to the study of the movement of continents and the creation of scientific programs for space projects. For the first time, according to geodynamic observations, it was possible to determine with an accuracy of several millimeters the horizontal and vertical component of the speed of movement of the Crimean Peninsula and the Eurasian tectonic plate. Space research with its help is carried out today within the framework of interstate relations with the USA, the Max-Planck Institute of the EU, Switzerland, Japan, etc.

Unfortunately, even for the most passionate lovers of astronomy, a tour of the telescope or its visit is impossible. It remains only to inspect it from the outside, and then go swimming on a wonderful beach under a telescope.
