Cathedral of St. Prince Vladimir is one of the most important and interesting for tourists Orthodox churches of Sevastopol, a monument of architecture and history, a functioning religious object. Russian admirals who earned this right after death due to their merits during their lifetime rest here.
In some guidebooks, reviews and even on maps, this temple in the city center is confused with a temple with a similar name in archaeological park of Chersonesos. The Vladimir temple with the tomb of the admirals is located in the center of the city, and not in Chersonesos.
The history of the cathedral began in 1825, when Admiral A. S. Greig, commander of the Black Sea Fleet, appealed to Emperor Alexander I with a request to erect a monument on the remains of the Chersonese, in which Prince Vladimir was baptized. The petition was accepted, and work began on the project, which resulted in a plan to erect a Christian cross-domed five-domed church in the Russian-Byzantine style. Although the project was ready, the start of construction was constantly postponed.
In 1842, at the request of Admiral Mikhail Petrovich Lazarev, it was decided to move the construction site of the temple to a hill in the city center. In 1848, the preparatory work finally began. In 1851, Admiral Lazarev died, and for his services to the city and the fatherland, it was decided to bury him in the crypt on the site of the future cathedral. The cathedral was laid on July 15, 1854, but due to the outbreak of the Crimean War and the siege of Sevastopol, construction was delayed again. During the war, the dead admirals V.A. Kornilov, V.I. Istomin, P.S. Nakhimov were buried in the crypt. Construction resumed in 1962, and it ended only in 1888, and according to the revised project of A. A. Avdeev, who also did not live to see the completion of the work.
