General information
Schelkino - a city on the northern coast of Crimea, 180 kilometers from Simferopol and the airport, and 100 kilometers from the bridge (Shchelkino on the map of Crimea). This is the most popular and developed resort of the Crimea on the Sea of Azov. The population of the city is about 10 thousand people, and this is the largest settlement on this coast.
The settlement on this site was formed only in 1978, when the construction of the Crimean nuclear power plant began. The builders of the nuclear power plant and their families lived here, but in 1989 the construction was suspended because it was recognized that the soil was unstable, and finally stopped after the collapse of the USSR. But after that, the village did not disappear, and today exists as a resort town. From 1993 to 1999, the world-famous electronic music festival "Kazaintip" was born and held here, but today there is no trace of it.
Holidays in Shchelkino
If you come to Shchelkino after other cities and resorts of the peninsula, located on the coast of the Sea of Azov, you will be surprised that there is such a developed place. The atmosphere here is far from rustic, as in other places on this coast. There is a center where life is in full swing, and even a kind of tourist area with Entertainment. In this area there are many cafes, attractions, shops and shops, a nightclub, and even an amusement park. The scale, of course, can not be compared with the Black Sea resorts, but the good thing is that all this is concentrated in one place, which means that all vacationers at the resort gather here, get acquainted, relax and have fun together.
The infrastructure in the city is well developed. There is everything you need, only large shopping centers and a cozy walking area for recreation or the embankment are missing. You can buy the most necessary food in supermarkets (there is a PUD), in small grocery stores and at the market, which is located right in the center, near the bus station. Meat for shish kebab and dairy products are best bought in the meat market-pavilion (located in the annex of house number 19, next to the entrance to the PUD supermarket), but do not forget to come early for shopping, and bargain, because without haggling prices are quite high. If you are resting in Shchelkino on your own transport, you can go for cheaper products to the market in the village of Lenino in 20 kilometers.
But it would not be fair to mention the features of the resort, which for you may become its shortcomings. There is very little entertainment here, and there are no attractions. Group excursions by bus to the popular attractions of the Crimea are sold, but given the remoteness of the village, you will spend more time on the road than on the attractions themselves. Many tourists will not like that there is no full-fledged promenade along which you can walk in the evenings. The role of the embankment here is performed by a dirt road along the beaches, which is forced by cars, and during the rain it turns into a swamp.
Well, one more thing that you should know, especially if you go with children, is that there is an invasion of ticks. Dense vegetation grows along the beaches, especially on the outskirts of the city, and it is easy to pick up this dangerous insect. Some tourists say that they saw ticks even on the beach in the sand. This is dangerous, because you need to periodically check the body and clothing for ticks.
Beaches in Shchelkino
If you did not know, then know that the Sea of Azov is much warmer than the Black Sea, the water warms up in early June. And when in the resorts of the south coast tourists are still cold and afraid to go into the cold water, here you can already swim with Might and main. This is because the Sea of Azov is much smaller than the Black Sea, besides there are no cold undercurrents, which even in summer can sharply make the warmest Black Sea resort unsuitable for comfortable swimming for several days.
The beaches here are very good. They are Sandy, made of yellow sand with an admixture of broken shells. The depth is ideal for recreation with children, children can go into the water tens of meters from the shore. In Shchelkino there is only one city beach, but it stretches continuously for 3 kilometers. It is modestly equipped, But Everything You Need Is there: changing cabins, umbrellas and sun beds for rent. Sun loungers are scarce, so bring a beach towel or mattress. There is also little entertainment, mostly just children's inflatable slides.
But this is not the only beach. 3 kilometers on foot or 4 by car there is another beautiful sandy beach called Tatarsky. It is very long, in general stretches for 30 kilometers, without infrastructure at all.

Cape Kazantip
View of Cape Kazantip Cape Kazantip is located north of Shchelkino behind the village of Mysovoye, and has the appearance of a cauldron, deeply protruding into the sea. It is because of its shape that it got its name "Kazan-type", which in translation from Crimean Tatar means "bottom of the cauldron".
It is a natural monument of national importance and a nature reserve protected by the state. However, nature here is a continuous steppe. For tourists, the Cape is more interesting for its landscape and numerous secluded coves with their sandy beaches.
You can get to Kazantip from Shchelkino on foot, and freely walk along it, go down to one of the bays and sunbathe or swim there. While walking you can meet snakes, but these are not deadly species, you can not worry about this. Crimean NPP
Current status of nuclear power plants (2017) In the Soviet years, near Shchelkino, they tried to build a Crimean nuclear power plant, but they did not have time to do this. After the collapse of the USSR, everything that was built was stolen, and an excellent man-made attraction remained from the nuclear power plant, where for many years lovers of extreme sports and similar attractions were illegally taken on excursions. After 2014, it was decided to use the materials of the station for the construction of the Crimean Bridge, so now it is gradually being dismantled. Whether the main building of the nuclear power plant, where all the most interesting things are located, will be preserved, we do not know, but so far dismantling works are being carried out everywhere on the territory, it is impossible to get there. Rather, it is impossible to get there officially, but if you agree with the guards, you can. Learn more about the Crimean NPP here.
🕐 Working hours: officially, a visit is not possible at the moment, but it is possible to negotiate with the security of the facility.
💵 Entrance fee / tickets price: contractual (with security)
🚶 How to get there: The NPP is located 7 kilometers from Shchelkino (Nuclear power plants on the map. You can get there on foot, by hitchhiking, or take a bus to the turn to the nuclear power plant, and then walk 1 kilometer.
As for entertainment, they are not very much, but what is good, they are all concentrated in one place. We are talking about an entertainment and tourist zone from the market and bus station to the beach. Here, along two pedestrian alleys, there are cafes and a night club, shops with souvenirs and tourist goods, an amusement park and prize shooting galleries, as well as other entertainment for vacationers. In addition to this zone and beaches, there is nothing else to do in the city.
Entertainment on the beaches in Shchelkino is not much, mostly tourists have to invent them for themselves. You can play volleyball or football on the sand, dive with a mask, there are inflatable slides for children. If you are ready to engage in active sports and entertainment, then in the kite school "Exoho" you can rent a surfboard or a set of equipment for kite surfing, and hire an instructor for training. Shchelkino is an ideal place for beginners, as the winds always blow, while there are almost no waves.
Another type of entertainment is fishing. You can go fishing directly from the shore, you can go by boat to the sea. Another popular place for catching Steers is the pier in the village of Mysovoye.
