The ancient settlement of Nymphaeum is one of the monuments of antiquity in the open air. It is periodically excavated by the Hermitage staff, but for the most part it is simply guarded. You can get here freely, wander and take pictures of the remains of structures. The place is interesting and attracts not only lovers of history and archeology, but also vacationers. However, without a guide and additional information about the Nymphs, exploring the ruins will be a bit boring.
Historians managed to learn a lot about Nymphs and largely thanks to research that continues today. It is known that the city was founded by the Greeks in the first half of the VI century BC, but even before that time there were already small settlements here. The favorable location and occupation with agriculture contributed to the rapid growth of the economy in the 5th century BC.e., there was an active grain trade to other states in exchange for various goods. Nymphaeum even had its own monetary units and was part of the Bosporus state. In the second half of the II-III centuries AD. after the raids of the barbarians and the destruction, the city gradually declines. At the end of the III century A.D. it was severely destroyed and defeated by the invasion of the Goths. However, during the excavations it was possible to establish that life here continued at the beginning of the IV century AD.
At various times, jewelry, coins and other valuables were found in the excavations of the Nymphaeum, but, unfortunately, some of them were looted, and the preserved part is now in the funds of the Hermitage.

🚶 How to get there
Nymphey is located in one of the suburbs of Kerch in the Geroyevskoye or Geroyevka microdistrict (settlement on the map). It is best to go here by your own transport or taxi, combining the trip with a visit to the museum to the Eltigenskogo landing, memorials and the ancient city of Tiritaka. You can also get here by city buses, but you will have to make 2-3 transfers from the center. You can use Yandex maps to plan your bus route.
