At the highest point of the Baydar mountain pass through the main ridge of the Crimean Mountains at an altitude of 503 meters there is an architectural monument – the Baydar Gate. They were built in 1848 according to the project of Yalta architect Karl Ivanovich Eshliman in honor of the completion of the Yalta — Sevastopol highway, now the old road or Sevastopol highway.
There is an observation deck on top of the gate, which offers a magnificent panorama of the Church of the Resurrection of Christ, the sea, Foros and the surrounding mountains. It may not be worth going here on purpose, but if you drive by, you can make a stop for 10 minutes. In front of the gate there is a spacious Parking lot, a market with souvenirs and a cafe.
The highway passes right through the gate, and many road travelers certainly want to drive through them. But the passage is so narrow that traffic through them is organized only in one direction from the village of Orlinoye, and a detour has been made for oncoming traffic. Therefore, if you want to definitely drive through the gate and not violate the rules, then when driving from the Foros side, you will have to first drive through the gate through the detour, and after the U-turn you will be able to drive through them.
🕐 Working hours: around the clock, it is better to visit during the day in clear weather.
💵 Entrance fee / tickets price: free of charge.
🚶 How to get there: from the center of Foros to the Baydar Gate by road a little more than 7 kilometers (Baydar Gate on the map). The road here leads through Foros Church of the Resurrection of Christ, so their visits should be combined. You can get there by taxi or private transport, public transport does not go here.
You can also walk here from Foros on foot in the form of an interesting one-day tourist route if you are confident in your abilities and are ready to walk 5 kilometers along the mountainous terrain with an altitude of 500 meters, and then also go back down. This route is generally uncomplicated, but if you do not have hiking experience and are poorly oriented, then it is better not to climb on your own. And, of course, you can make a hike, and go back down with hitchhikers, because there are always a lot of car tourists here. You need to take water with you on the route, sun protection (panama hat, sunscreen) on hot days, and put on comfortable sports or hiking shoes.
The hiking trail begins on the South Coast highway in the area of the gas station, more precisely 300 meters to the east of it. It is clearly visible on the slopes, quite wide and clearly distinguishable, it goes in a serpentine. Actually, there are even two trails: one is unpaved and difficult to distinguish, and the other is a pedestrian path with an old asphalt pavement. Obviously, it is better to walk on asphalt, because the ground is poorly groomed, in places you will have to make your way over rocks and through bushes. Here the beginning of the asphalt path on the map.
In order not to get lost, we recommend using Yandex.Navigator or at least Organic maps offline map apps, Maps.me , OSM, etc., this path is marked on them. As a result, it will lead you first to the Foros church, and from the church you will have to walk along the asphalt road along the Sevastopol highway to the gate one and a half kilometers.
