What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
The Temple of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God (John the Baptist, John the Baptist) is an ancient Orthodox church on the territory of the Genoese fortress in Feodosia, which is definitely worth a visit. The temple is active and attracts with its extraordinary atmosphere. Holy relics are kept here, especially revered among parishioners and tourists - the Kaspersky Icon of the Mother of God and icons with particles of the relics of St. Panteleimon the Healer and St. Luke of the Crimea. In the courtyard in front of the main entrance, slabs from ancient Armenian tombstones are laid underfoot.
It was built in the XIV century, in the same period as the nearby Church of St. John the Theologian. It was originally an Armenian church and was called John the Baptist (John the Baptist, Hovhannes Mkrtych), but in 1875 it was renamed the Iveron Icon Church and transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church. Since 1996, the temple has been restored and opened to believers.
Among the historical facts relating to the Iveron Temple, we especially highlight the following:
- In 1474, the famous traveler Athanasius Nikitin, who returned from India, prayed here. A monument to him is located 50 meters from the temple.
- In 2005, a memorial cross was erected next to the temple as a reminder of the victims of the Bolshevik terror of 1918-1922. At that time, clergy and representatives of the Cossacks, suspected of agitation against the Soviet government, were shot near the walls of the shrine.
