The Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church of St. John the Theologian (John the Evangelist) is a small ancient temple opposite the Genoese fortress, formerly part of the complex of religious buildings of the fortress.

Built in the XIV century. The architecture is typical of all Armenian churches, modest, without frills and bright decorative elements.

Today the church is not functioning, but services are occasionally held by the forces of the Armenian parish. Unfortunately, it will most likely not be possible to get inside the church, most of the time it is closed. But if you're lucky and the gate is open, you can go in.

John the Theologian (John Zebedee) is one of the twelve apostles, the only one of them who died a natural death. The son of Zebedee, nicknamed "The Theologian", evangelist, brother of the Apostle James. In the Gospel of Mark, together with his brother, he is called Jesus Christ "The Son of Thunder."

The Church fathers considered him the same person as John the Evangelist, the "Beloved Disciple," although modern theologians and biblical scholars have no consensus on the identity of these people. But according to the tradition of most Christian denominations, the Apostle John is the author of the Gospel of John, the Book of Revelation and the three epistles included in the New Testament. At the same time, some scientists believe that these books were written by unknown authors.

The memory of the Apostle John is celebrated in the Orthodox Church on May 8 (21), as well as on June 30 (July 13) — the Council of the Twelve Apostles, September 26 (October 9) — the repose of John the Theologian, in the Catholic Church and other Western churches — on December 27.

Artistically and symbolically, he is depicted at an advanced age, in a red robe, with an inkwell, a pen and a book in his hands and in the presence of an angel, often an eagle; sometimes he is represented as young, beardless and long-haired.
