What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
Kunche Street is the shortest and narrowest street in Kazan. It is not particularly beautiful, although it is decorated after Reconstruction with lanterns and shops in the style of the XIX century, and therefore it is worth visiting it only along the way during a walk through the tourist area of the Old Tatar settlement. The street faces the rear side Apanaev mosque, and on the other side it is bounded by the fence and buildings of the Kazan College of Technology and design.
According to various estimates, its length ranges from 90 to 110 meters, the exact figure depends on the start and end points of the measurement. You can try to measure it yourself, because it is completely pedestrian and you will not interfere with anyone.
In the pre-Soviet period, it was called Apanaevsky lane and belonged to the 5th police unit. In 1927, it was given the modern name "Kunche" (in Tatar "Kunche uramy"), which means "Tanner", since in the XVIII – XIX in Starotatarskaya Sloboda there was a Craft Center for the manufacture of national Tatar leather shoes.
