What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
The second Cathedral Mosque of Kazan (Apanaevskaya mosque) is located just a few dozen meters from the cathedral al-Marjani mosques. Both mosques were built with the personal permission of Empress Catherine II, Apanaevskaya was built from 1768 to 1771. Unfortunately, in Soviet times, the mosque was significantly damaged: the minaret and vaults of the halls were destroyed, the building was divided into three floors, a kindergarten was located. Only in 2011, after a major restoration, it returned to its former appearance and purpose. Today it is a functioning religious object and a historical monument of architecture, since the mosque is made in an unusual architectural style that incorporates elements of Russian "Moscow" baroque and Tatar decorative art.
