Gumbashi Pass: The Best Viewpoint on the Route from KCR to Kislovodsk

Article and Section Navigation

Overview and Is It Worth Visiting

At Gumbashi Pass

Gumbashi Pass is a mountain pass at an altitude of 2144 meters, located on the northern slope of the Main Caucasus Range in Karachay-Cherkessia. Its name translates from Karachay as "Sand Head" — referring to the unusual sandstone and limestone rock formations found in these places. It's probably not worth traveling here specifically from far away, but if you're traveling between Kislovodsk, Pyatigorsk, Yessentuki, and Karachay-Cherkessia (or vice versa), then this is a must-stop point — it's right along the way.

The main value of the pass is the breathtaking views of the mountains and valleys. In good weather, Elbrus is clearly visible from here — only 53 kilometers to its peak in a straight line. Strictly speaking, there isn't just one viewpoint here, but several spread over about 4 kilometers of the road. The highest point is at about 2050 meters (according to altimeter readings). There's an equipped viewpoint with a cafe and a "Gum-Bashi" photo zone — entry is free, but it's not the highest point. To get higher, you need to drive further towards Kislovodsk to another area with the "Krugozor Gumbashi Pass" cafe. Our advice: don't limit yourself to just one stop; make several, and maybe even have a coffee somewhere with a view — it's well worth it.

You can only get here by your own car. The road is fully paved, but the surface quality leaves much to be desired — there are many potholes and patches, so you need to drive carefully. The pass is also a traditional stopping point for almost all organized tours from the Caucasian Mineral Waters resorts into Karachay-Cherkessia.

🚶 How to Get There

Gumbashi Pass is located on the A-157 highway connecting Karachay-Cherkessia and the Caucasian Mineral Waters region (pass on the map). The landmark is the section of road between the village of Verkhnyaya Mara (on the KCR side) and the city of Kislovodsk (on the CMW side).

The coordinates of the highest point of the pass are marked on our map. If you're driving from the Karachaevsk side towards Kislovodsk, you'll first encounter the "Gum-Bashi" viewpoint with a cafe and photo zone. Then, after driving a bit further up, you'll reach the higher area with the "Krugozor" cafe. We recommend stopping at both: each offers a different perspective of the mountains and valleys.

The road is fully paved, but the surface isn't perfect — there are potholes, patches, and some rough sections. You can drive a regular passenger car, but be careful, especially at night or after rain.

Public transport does not go here, but the pass is included in the route of almost all organized tours from Kislovodsk, Pyatigorsk, and Yessentuki towards Karachay-Cherkessia (Arkhyz, Dombay, Teberda).

Just a reminder that the best way to explore the attractions of KCR is through guided tours. Even better if they're conducted by locals who know and love their region. You can find and book group or private tours from locals with reviews on these trusted sites:
