The set of documents is standard for a trip abroad, but with a couple of important nuances. Everything is checked twice: when leaving the Russian Federation and when entering Abkhazia.

No customs declarations, fee payments, or temporary vehicle registration are required upon entry. All this was abolished many years ago. The only thing you need to buy is Abkhazian insurance, but more on that later.
Important: Before your trip, check for unpaid fines and debts. They might not let you leave the country because of them.
Insurance at the Border: Where to Buy and How Much It Costs
Russian MTPL insurance is not valid in Abkhazia. To drive in the country, you need to take out a local compulsory liability insurance policy. Without it, you can be fined – first a warning, for a repeat violation 1800 rubles.
Where to buy? The most popular option is right after passing Abkhazian passport control at the Psou checkpoint. There are several kiosks and windows there, open 24/7. Queues happen but are usually short. Payment is accepted both in cash (rubles) and by card. But it's better to have cash on hand: Russian Visa/Mastercard cards don't work, Mir and UnionPay aren't accepted everywhere.
You can also arrange the policy in advance online at strahovanie-abkhazia.ru. But note: the site is often blocked by Roskomnadzor in Russia, so you might need a VPN. Online and on-site prices are the same.

Insurance is issued for the car, not the driver. So if there are several of you, one policy per car is enough.
Attention! At the Psou checkpoint, insurers often try to sell life insurance for all passengers along with the auto policy. They say they won't sell it without it. This is a scam. Auto insurance is sold separately. If they insist – either find another booth nearby, or firmly say you only need "auto liability". We've been through this, it works.
Power of Attorney for the Car: When It's Needed
A question that worries many: if I'm driving a car that isn't mine, do I need a power of attorney?
- If you are included in the MTPL policy as a person permitted to drive — by law, a power of attorney is not required. But in practice, Russian border guards sometimes ask to see a power of attorney if the driver's last name doesn't match the owner's last name on the registration certificate (STS). To avoid disputes, it's better to have a simple written power of attorney from the owner with the right to exit the country. Notarization is not mandatory if it's not for exiting the country, but many get it notarized just to be safe.
- If you are not included in the insurance policy — then a power of attorney is definitely required, preferably notarized. Otherwise, they might not let you out.
- If the car is owned by a legal entity — a power of attorney from the organization for the right to exit the country is mandatory, plus a resolution on the appointment of the director, etc. A notarized one is better.
The power of attorney must clearly state the right to exit the Russian Federation. Without this phrase, border guards might turn you back.

How to Cross the Border by Car: Step-by-Step
The border crossing is via the "Psou" checkpoint (open 24/7, but there are technical breaks: 01:00–03:00, 07:45–08:15, 19:45–20:15). During the high season (July–August), queues can reach several hours. It's best to go at night or early in the morning (right after 08:00).
The process consists of two stages:
- Russian side. All passengers get out of the car and go to the building for passport control (you can send them ahead while you're in the queue). The driver with the car documents undergoes control in the car. They check passports, STS, check for debts, ask questions about children. After an inspection (selective), you meet the passengers in a special area and drive on.
- Abkhazian side. Passport control again, but usually faster and more lenient. Often they just check the driver's documents and do a quick visual inspection of the car.
No papers need to be filled out, and nothing needs to be paid (except for insurance, which you buy after passing control on the Abkhazian side).
Useful tips:
- If there are children in the car and only one adult, the children can stay in the car and go through control with the driver.
- At passport control, you'll have to wake the child up – border guards need to see they are alive and match the photo.
- On the Abkhazian side, buy insurance immediately to avoid a fine later.
Roads to Abkhazia and Distance from Russian Cities
You can only reach the border via the highway through the Krasnodar Region. The most popular route from central Russia is via the toll M-4 "Don" highway. The toll depends on the sections, roughly from 4000 rubles from Moscow.
The last 300 km from Krasnodar to the border is the highway through Goryachy Klyuch, Dzhubga, Tuapse, Sochi. This is a narrow, winding road with heavy traffic, especially in summer. Covering these 300 km can take from 5 to 12 hours. We recommend driving at night or early in the morning.

Gasoline in Abkhazia: Where to Refuel and Prices
Fuel used to be cheaper in Abkhazia than in Russia, but now prices are almost equal, and the quality at some stations is questionable. As of 2026, prices are approximately:
- AI-95 – from 64 ₽ (in Sochi around 63 ₽)
- AI-92 – from 52 ₽ (in Sochi around 58 ₽)
- Diesel – from 64 ₽ (in Sochi around 68 ₽)
It's better to fill up before the border at a Russian gas station (e.g., Rosneft near the checkpoint). If you do have to refuel in Abkhazia, choose trusted chains: "Rosneft" (local, but with decent fuel) and "Azid". "Podorozhnik" is less reliable, and it's best to avoid small private stations.

Traffic Rules, Fines, and Driving Peculiarities
The roads in Abkhazia are decent, but there are nuances:
- The main highway along the coast has good asphalt, but many speed bumps (sometimes without warning). Slow down to 30 km/h where there are speed limit signs.
- Local drivers often violate rules and drive recklessly, but if you follow them, you'll get fined. The traffic police actively catch tourists and may ignore locals.
- You constantly encounter cows, sheep, and horses on the roads. Be careful and avoid causing accidents.
- Speeding is recorded starting at +10 km/h (in Russia it's +20). So don't get carried away.
- For many violations, license confiscation is possible. They are only returned after paying the fine at the traffic police station where the protocol was issued. This can take a lot of time.

- Driving under the influence – 4800–6000 ₽ or license suspension for 1–2 years, or arrest up to 15 days

Our Experience Traveling by Car
We've driven to Abkhazia many times. It's very convenient and exciting, especially if you don't plan to stay in one place but actually travel. The most memorable trips are the summer ones, when we had to sit in traffic on the Dzhubga-Sochi highway for hours. Once we spent 16 hours in a traffic jam! Since then, we plan our route to pass this section late at night. The border experience also varies: once we got through in 40 minutes, another time we stood for 4 hours.
In our opinion, the main mistakes beginners make are:
- Not buying Abkhazian insurance immediately, hoping they won't get caught. They get caught.
- Driving someone else's car without a power of attorney, even if they're included in the insurance. Better to be safe and have the paper.
- Refueling at shady gas stations and then wondering why the engine is misfiring.
