Pobeda: 8 Surprises You Are Not Ready For (And It Is Not About Turbulence)

You bought a ticket for 999 rubles and are already imagining how you will sit by the window, recline the seat, and doze off to the steady hum of the engines. Let us open your eyes: the seat will not recline, the window seat costs money, and the backpack will have to be squeezed into a 36x30x27 frame under the watchful eye of an employee at the gate. Pobeda is not a bad airline. It just plays by different rules that you did not read. We break down 8 things that are better to learn before buying a ticket, not at the aircraft steps.

Article and section navigation

Pobeda is the main Russian low-cost carrier and a subsidiary of Aeroflot. It flies cheaper than anyone, saves on everything it can and cannot, and regularly becomes the hero of angry posts. The reason is not that the airline is "bad", but that passengers arrive with the expectations of a regular carrier and get a business model. Strict but honest: you pay only for the flight, everything else is a separate option. If you know the rules in advance, the flight goes smoothly. If not, you run into surcharges, fines, and a ruined mood.

Steps instead of a jet bridge – the first hint that you are flying a low-cost carrier. It gets more interesting from here

Here are 8 things worth knowing before buying a ticket. Not to talk you out of it, but so you are not surprised at the gate.

You are flying a business model, not an airline

Pobeda's base fare is only the flight. Baggage, seat selection, food, check-in at the counter, calling support – separate services. This is not greed; this is how every low-cost carrier in the world works. You buy a ticket for 999 rubles and get exactly what you paid for: movement from point A to point B. Everything else is from the menu.

Irritation arises when a person expects 30,000-ruble service after paying 999. If you accept the rules of the game in advance, the flight goes smoothly. If not, arguments begin at the gate that lead nowhere.

Pobeda is neither "bad" nor "good". It is simply different. A different business model, different rules, different logic. Accepting this in advance is cheaper than arguing with employees at the gate when there are two minutes left before boarding closes.

But at the same time, it is fair to say that the airline's rules are written like a "quest", and one might even think this was done deliberately by marketers to profit from passengers' inattention. And paid calls as the only way to quickly contact the airline, where even a long wait on the line is charged, also cannot help but suggest certain thoughts.

36x30x27: the size that decides everything

For free, you can take into the cabin one piece of hand luggage up to 36 x 30 x 27 cm that fits in the sizer. This is a medium backpack or a handbag. A regular hand-luggage suitcase that passes with most airlines does not fit here. It is wider and deeper.

An alternative option is two bags: main hand luggage up to 15×36×30 cm and a backpack (or handbag, or briefcase) up to 12×36×30 cm. Together they must fit into the same 36×30×27 cm sizer.

Additionally, you can take for free: duty-free goods in a sealed bag up to 24×32×10 cm, a laptop or tablet in a soft case, a walking umbrella, a bouquet of flowers, outerwear, baby food, medicines, crutches, and a wheelchair.

There are no weight restrictions. At all. Carry bricks if you like, as long as they fit in the sizer and you can lift the bag into the overhead bin. But as soon as the bag stops fitting the dimensions, the baggage tariff kicks in, and there the weight is regulated: 10 or 20 kg depending on the purchased option.

Lifehack: measure your hand luggage at home with a tape measure. Not "by eye" and not "it looks about right". Even a couple of centimeters of excess can be decisive, especially on connecting flights where you have 40 minutes for the transfer.

The sizer at the gate – the main attraction

Before boarding there is Pobeda's branded sizer – a metal frame with a 36x30x27 cm cell. Staff ask you to put your hand luggage in it. It does not fit – go pay for baggage. And here is where the most unpleasant part begins: there is no time for this anymore. The flight closes strictly on schedule, and if you go to pay for oversized items, you may not be allowed back.

No persuasion, tears, or "but I will be quick" work. This is not rudeness, it is the regulation. Employees act according to instructions and will not break them for you. Understanding this in advance is cheaper than arguing at the gate.

If hand luggage together with a duty-free item does not fit in the sizer, something will have to be left on the ground. The duty-free bag is considered a separate additional item by the rules, but at the gate they may ask you to put it into the main bag – then the dimensions stop matching. Buy at duty-free with an eye on the size of your hand luggage.

There is no baggage. At all. And that is not a mistake

Pobeda has no free baggage on any flight in the basic fare, including international. You must pay extra for each piece in the baggage compartment. The only exception is promotions and promo codes that the airline sometimes runs, as well as the more expensive Beneficial and Maximum fares, which include 10 and 20 kilograms of baggage respectively.

The principle is simple: the earlier you pay, the cheaper. The lowest price is when buying a ticket on the website. The highest is at the airport at the check-in counter.

Comparison of options for carrying things on Pobeda: what is more profitable
Option Dimensions and weight Where to pay Comment
Basic hand luggage up to 36x30x27 cm, weight not limited Free One piece OR two smaller bags
XL hand luggage up to 55x40x25 cm, weight not limited Online, cheapest when buying a ticket Paid option, cheaper than baggage
Baggage 10 kg up to 10 kg, one piece Online when buying a ticket The most budget baggage option
Baggage 20 kg up to 20 kg, one piece Online or at the counter Optimal for long trips
Payment at the counter Any option At the airport Noticeably more expensive than online

An important point: you can add baggage online no later than 1 hour before departure via the website or in the booking management section. Via the call center – no later than 4 hours before. After check-in at the counter – only at the airport at the highest price.

Simple arithmetic: for a short 2-3 day flight with one person – 36x30x27 hand luggage will do. For a trip of 5 days or more, or for a family – buy baggage online right away when booking the ticket. It is cheaper than doing it at the counter, and many times cheaper than paying at the gate.

Food: order in advance, or you will be hungry and angry

There is no free food on board Pobeda. Never, on any flights. Free only water, and only on request. But you can order paid meals – the "Food in Flight" service is available when buying a ticket, through booking management, or during online check-in.

The menu includes the "Home", "Classic", and "Sea" sets, as well as the new "Flight Attendant's Dream" and "Pilot's" sets. There are children's sets. The cost is from 700 rubles for a children's set and from 1,045 rubles for an adult set.

Important: food must be ordered in advance. For departures from Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Sochi – no later than 12 hours before departure, for other airports – 24 hours before.

You can bring your own food. Formally, according to the rules – only purchased at the airport in the departure zone. In practice, at security they let you through with your own food in reasonable quantities: sandwiches, nuts, fruit, cookies.

If you are flying more than two hours and did not order food in advance – bring it with you or have a snack at the airport before boarding. You cannot buy food on board, only receive a pre-paid order.

A family at opposite ends of the cabin is normal

Seat selection is paid. The booking system automatically seats passengers so that as many people as possible want to pay extra for seats together. Even a family of four can be scattered around the cabin: 1+1+2 or even 1+1+1+1.

But there are exceptions. Children under 12 fly next to their parents free of charge. Teenagers from 12 to 18 – as well: by a court decision, Pobeda is obliged to provide neighboring seats free of charge for them too.

You cannot swap seats with other passengers after boarding. This is an airline rule, for violating which you may be held liable. It sounds harsh, but it is a really working rule. Over many years of observing Pobeda flights, we have seen such conflicts more than once.

Seat backs do not recline. At all. Physically. This is part of the savings: fewer mechanisms – less weight – less fuel. You will not be able to sleep in flight, but that is the price for a cheap ticket.

If you are flying as a couple or family, pay for seats together online when buying the ticket. It is cheaper than at the counter. Asking to swap seats at check-in or in the cabin is useless: the rule is strict, and you cannot count on the goodwill of flight attendants.

Seat backs do not recline. Ever. Get used to it

This is not a joke or an exaggeration. The seat backs in the Pobeda cabin do not recline, and this is presented by the airline's marketers as an advantage. It is supposedly done to save weight and simplify the design, and for the convenience of passengers 🤣. You will not be able to sleep in flight. You will not be able to rest by leaning back either.

What to do? Take a neck pillow if you are flying long. Or accept it. This is the price for a ticket that costs less than a train from Moscow to St. Petersburg.

Boarding: strictly 25 minutes that decide everything

Boarding the plane is a separate quest. It is announced vaguely, and the time is sometimes moved a few minutes earlier. Since June 2, 2026, at all airports in Pobeda's route network, boarding ends strictly 25 minutes before departure. This is a single rule for everyone: previously some airports closed 20 minutes before, now everywhere it is 25.

Online check-in opens 24 hours before departure. It closes differently depending on the airport: at most – 2 hours before, at Sheremetyevo, Sochi, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, and Istanbul – 3 hours before, at Vnukovo and Alanya – 4 hours before. Check-in at the airport is free, but counters close 40 minutes before departure at most airports.

During boarding, it is best to sit near the boarding gate and not go anywhere – not to the toilet, not for water, not to the shop. Even if it seems there is plenty of time, the announcement can come suddenly and quietly. On Pobeda it works exactly like that.

A short checklist: are you ready for Pobeda?

Let us put everything into one list. Check before you leave for the airport:

  • Hand luggage dimensions – no more than 36x30x27 cm. Measured with a tape measure, not "by eye".
  • Alternative: two bags – main up to 15×36×30 cm + backpack up to 12×36×30 cm.
  • Liquids – in bottles up to 100 ml, in one transparent bag up to 1 liter.
  • Power bank – in hand luggage, not in checked baggage. No more than 2 pieces, do not put in the overhead bin.
  • Baggage paid online if needed. Deadline – 1 hour before departure.
  • Food ordered in advance if flying more than two hours.
  • Seats selected online if it is important to sit together.
  • Online check-in completed 24 hours before departure.
  • Screenshots of tickets saved.
  • Approach boarding in advance: it closes 25 minutes before departure.

That is everything you need to know about Pobeda before flying. If you follow these rules, the flight will go without surprises: you will pay exactly what you planned and fly on schedule. If you ignore them, you risk running into surcharges and a ruined mood.
