Thailand in winter is a magnet for tourists from all over the world. There are especially many Russians, and it shows: you hear Russian speech everywhere, buckwheat is on the menu, and sometimes familiar music plays on the beaches. But there are also pluses: the weather at this time is almost perfect — if you know exactly where to go. We won't repeat generic phrases about "high season" but will go through the key points that actually affect your choice.
Weather in Thailand in winter (November–March)
The main misconception is that winter is equally good everywhere. In fact, the coastlines have different personalities. We've seen this over several trips: in the same December, Phuket was perfect, while Samui was windy and choppy. So let's break it down.
Andaman Sea vs Gulf of Thailand: there is a difference
- Andaman Sea (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta, Phi Phi) — from November to March, there's almost no rain. The sea is calm, visibility is excellent. This is the best time for diving and snorkeling. Air temperature +30...+32°C, water +28°C.
- Gulf of Thailand (Pattaya, Samui, Phangan, Koh Chang) — the weather here is a bit more temperamental. On Samui and Phangan, November–December may still see brief showers, but by January everything stabilizes. The sea can be rough at times, especially on the east coast. Meanwhile, Pattaya and Rayong are almost always dry and hot, but the water can be murky.
Our advice: if crystal-clear water and calm seas are critical for you, choose the Andaman coast. If budget and entertainment are your priorities, the Gulf won't let you down.

Detailed resort review for winter vacations
Phuket
Weather: ideal from November to March. Almost no rain, sun every day. The sea is calm, underwater visibility up to 20–30 meters.
Beaches: Kata, Karon, Patong (loud), Nai Harn (quiet). All are clean and well-maintained.
Nightlife: Patong is the center of nightlife. Bangla Road goes all night.
Prices: high, especially in December and January. A hotel for New Year's will cost 2–3 times more than in May.
Who it's for: if your budget allows and you love comfort, the choice is obvious. But be prepared for crowds of tourists, traffic jams, and prices on par with Maldives resorts.
Caution: during the New Year holidays, Phuket is overcrowded. If you don't like queues at restaurants, go in late January or February.
Pattaya
Weather: dry and hot from November to March. Almost no rain. But the sea can be murky due to waves, especially in December.
Beaches: Jomtien is better than the city beach. Koh Lan is a good day-trip option.
Nightlife: legendary Walking Street, bars, clubs — all in place.
Prices: among the lowest in Thailand. Accommodation and food are several times cheaper than on Phuket.
Who it's for: the perfect choice for those who want to combine sea, entertainment, and a budget-friendly trip. Just don't expect turquoise water right in the city.
Samui
Weather: in November–December, rain and wind are possible. It gets better by January, but it only becomes fully clear in February.
Beaches: Chaweng (party), Lamai (quieter), and many secluded bays.
Vibe: the island is calm, suitable for family holidays and romantic couples.
Prices: higher than in Pattaya, but lower than on Phuket.
Nuance: in December, it can get quite windy — swimming may be uncomfortable. So choose the second half of winter if you want guaranteed calm seas.
Krabi
Weather: dry, sunny, perfect from November to March. This is one of the best options in winter.
Beaches: Railay, Ao Nang, Tonsai. White sand, turquoise water.
Things to do: rock climbing, cave treks, island tours.
Prices: average. Cheaper than Phuket, but more expensive than Pattaya.
Who it's for: Krabi is a compromise between beauty and price. If you don't need 24/7 parties but want stunning landscapes — this is your choice.
Koh Lanta
Weather: dry, sunny, no rain. The sea is calm.
Beaches: long, sandy, uncrowded. Great for long walks.
Things to do: lounge on the beach, ride a scooter, watch sunsets. Diving and snorkeling are also available, but reefs are weaker than around Phi Phi.
Prices: moderate. Accommodation is cheaper than on Phuket, but food is about the same.
Who it's for: Koh Lanta is our favorite for a relaxing getaway. It really feels disconnected from civilization, yet has everything you need.
Koh Chang
Weather: from November to February — dry season. Rain is rare, but the sea can be rough on the east coast.
Beaches: white sand, coconut palms, but infrastructure is less developed.
Vibe: wild nature, waterfalls, jungle treks. Almost no nightlife.
Prices: average. Cheaper than Phuket, but more expensive than Pattaya due to remoteness.
Tip: if you want solitude but not complete isolation — Koh Chang works. But keep in mind that the journey from Bangkok takes 4–5 hours.

- Budget option (Pattaya, Rayong): hotel from 600 baht (1367 rub.) per night, lunch 150–200 baht (456 rub.).
