"How much money to take to Sri Lanka?" — a question that puzzles many. This country is an ambiguous destination: on one hand, it's a developing tourism market, on the other — prices for some services can be an unpleasant surprise. We have traveled Sri Lanka many times to its farthest corners and are ready to honestly tell you what to expect when planning a budget.
Our main conclusion: Sri Lanka is not super-budget Asia. Prices for accommodation, food, and especially alcohol and attractions can be higher than you expect. However, with a smart approach, a vacation here can be very rich and not ruinous.
An important point we learned in Sri Lanka: the culture of bargaining is not as developed here as in other Asian countries. Prices for packaged goods are fixed and indicated right on them. You can bargain at markets, when renting transport, and buying souvenirs, but without aggression. However, it always makes sense to compare prices in different places and use taxi ordering apps.
How much money to take if you are going on a package tour
This is the easiest option for planning. Your tour package usually includes flights, accommodation, breakfasts, and sometimes transfers. The main expenses you need to account for are food (lunches and dinners), excursions, local transport, and souvenirs. The average tour duration is 7-14 days.
| Expense item | Budget | Comfort |
|---|---|---|
| Lunch and dinner (cafes/restaurants) | 1,500 - 2,500 | 3,000 - 6,000 |
| Drinks (water, juices, coconuts) | 300 - 600 | 600 - 1,500 |
| Local transport (tuk-tuk/taxi) | 500 - 1,000 | 1,000 - 2,500 |
| Additional excursions and entrance tickets | 1,000 - 2,000 | 3,000 - 6,000 |
| Souvenirs, small purchases | 500 - 1,000 | 1,000 - 2,500 |
| TOTAL per day | 3,800 - 7,100 ≈ 11.48 - 21.45 USD |
8,600 - 18,500 ≈ 25.99 - 55.9 USD |
| For 7 days | 26,600 - 49,700 ≈ 80.38 - 150 USD |
60,200 - 129,500 ≈ 182 - 391 USD |
| For 10 days | 38,000 - 71,000 ≈ 115 - 215 USD |
86,000 - 185,000 ≈ 260 - 559 USD |
| For 14 days | 53,200 - 99,400 ≈ 161 - 300 USD |
120,400 - 259,000 ≈ 364 - 783 USD |
Conclusion: when going on a standard 10-day tour you can take with you from 40,000 to 185,000 rupees (121 - 559 USD) per person (in addition to money for larger purchases). But it's important to remember that prices for excursions and entrance to attractions in Sri Lanka are very high, so the "comfort" budget has such a wide range and depends on what and how much you plan to visit, or if you'll limit yourself to only beach relaxation near the hotel.
How much money to take for independent travel
Independent travel in Sri Lanka is an opportunity to see more, but also responsibility for planning all expenses. The budget needs to be calculated especially carefully, taking into account travel between cities.
Accommodation: from hostels to good hotels
- Hostel bed – from 3,000 rupees/night / 9.06 USD.
- Room in a guesthouse without air conditioning – from 5,000 rupees/night / 15.11 USD.
- Normal clean room in a hotel or guesthouse with air conditioning – from 10,000 rupees/night / 30.22 USD.
- Room in a good 4-5* hotel – from 20,000 rupees/night / 60.43 USD.
We noticed that in Sri Lanka it's difficult to find something in between "just a bed" and "good hotel" for reasonable money. Often guesthouses for 5-7 thousand rupees can disappoint in terms of cleanliness.
Food and dining: from street food to restaurants
- Dish (rice with chicken or curry) in a local eatery – from 400 rupees / 1.21 USD.
- One dish in a tourist cafe – from 1,000 rupees / 3.02 USD.
- Dinner in a good restaurant with a drink – from 3,000 rupees / 9.06 USD.
- Local Lion beer 0.5l in a store – from 480 rupees (twice as expensive in cafes) / 1.45 USD.
- Coconut on the beach – from 120-150 rupees / 0.36 USD.
In our experience, you can eat very cheaply in local cafes, but you need to be ready for simplicity and monotony of food. However, tourist restaurants offer excellent quality but at prices comparable to European ones.
Transport: tuk-tuks, trains and motorbike rental
- Motorbike rental per day – from 2,500 rupees (in tourist places from 3,500-4,000) / 7.55 USD.
- Petrol 95, 1 liter – 340 rupees / 1.03 USD.
- Tuk-tuk ride (via Pick-me or Uber app) – from 200 rupees / 0.6 USD.
- Train from Colombo to Hikkaduwa (100 km) – about 200 rupees / 0.6 USD.
- Intercity bus (air-conditioned) – from 1,500 rupees / 4.53 USD.
We believe that public transport in Sri Lanka is one of the main advantages. Trains and buses are very cheap, although not always comfortable. But with tuk-tuk drivers you need to be on guard: they often ask tourists for 2-3 times more.
Entertainment, excursions and shopping
- Entrance to Sigiriya – 35 dollars.
- Entrance to other historical parks (Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa) – 30 dollars.
- Massage (1 hour) – from 2,000 rupees / 6.04 USD.
- SIM card with 20GB internet for a month – 1,399 rupees / 4.23 USD.
- Souvenir magnet – from 300 rupees / 0.91 USD.
An important point that surprised us: prices for tourist attractions are dozens of times higher than for locals. This significantly affects the budget if you plan an active excursion program.
| Expense item | Budget traveler | Standard option | Comfortable vacation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | 3,000 - 5,000 | 10,000 - 15,000 | 20,000 - 30,000+ |
| Food | 1,200 - 2,000 | 3,000 - 5,000 | 6,000 - 10,000+ |
| Transport (local) | 500 - 1,000 | 1,500 - 3,000 | 3,000 - 6,000+ |
| Entertainment/shopping | 500 - 1,500 | 2,000 - 5,000 | 5,000 - 15,000+ |
| TOTAL per day | 5,200 - 9,500 ≈ 15.71 - 28.71 USD |
16,500 - 28,000 ≈ 49.86 - 84.61 USD |
34,000 - 61,000+ ≈ 103 - 184 USD |
Important for independent travelers: This table is a basis for calculating daily expenses in one place. To these amounts you must add the cost of flights, insurance and transport for travel between cities. If you plan to visit 3-4 cities in 2 weeks, budget an additional 5,000 - 15,000 rupees for trains/buses. Each trip is unique, especially if you want to see many attractions that cost 30-50 dollars per entrance. For more details on all price nuances, read our complete guide to prices in Sri Lanka.

Final budget tips for Sri Lanka
- It's better to take money in dollars or euros and exchange for rupees at the airport, in jewelry shops or authorized exchange offices.
- Bank cards are accepted in large hotels, restaurants and supermarkets, but cash is needed for small purchases, transport and markets.
- Download the Pick-me or Uber app — this will save you from inflated tuk-tuk prices. Metered rides for tourists are rare here.
- Fruit prices heavily depend on the season. In season (May-July) mango and other local fruits are much cheaper, but overall fruit prices are very high.
- Alcohol is very expensive due to high taxes. If you plan to consume, account for this in your budget.
- The excursion program can "eat up" the lion's share of the budget. Choose the attractions most interesting to you, as entrance to each costs 30-50 dollars.
Sri Lanka is a country of contrasts, where you can travel both very budget-friendly and very expensive. Our experience shows that with proper planning and understanding of local realities, you can get unforgettable impressions without going broke. Have a good trip!
