Overview & Is It Worth Visiting

Kuil Sri Muniswarar Selat Panchor Hindu Temple

Kuil Sri Muniswarar Selat Panchor (also known as Sri Muniswarar Temple) is a small but significant Hindu temple in Langkawi, located at the foot of a marble cliff in the western part of the island. The temple is dedicated to Sri Muniswarar — one of the fierce guardian deities in the Hindu tradition, believed to protect against evil forces and serve as a patron to his devotees.

The temple is built in a style typical of Hindu shrines: brightly painted gopuram towers, sculptures of deities, and rich symbolism. Despite its modest size, it makes an impression with its vibrant colors and well-maintained grounds. The interior is typical of South Indian sanctuaries — here you can see statues of Sri Muniswarar as well as other Hindu deities.

Of particular interest is the area behind the temple buildings. Here, right inside the marble cliff, there are small low grottoes with miniature figures of deities. This spot creates a feeling of being in a sacred space — quiet, cool, and secluded.

Very close by, just 100 meters along the same cliff, is the Buddhist temple Wat Tham Kisap (Lucky Temple). Both temples are in the same location, making them easy to visit together.

Is it worth making a special trip just for this temple? If you're exploring the western part of the island (for example, visiting Wat Koh Wanaram), then it's definitely worth stopping by — especially if you plan to visit the neighboring Buddhist temple as well. But it's probably not worth a dedicated trip from the distant beaches just for this shrine. Be careful: there are many stray dogs in this area.

🚶 How to Get There

Kuil Sri Muniswarar Selat Panchor Temple is in the west of Langkawi, about two kilometers from the center of Kuah town, and a couple of hundred meters from the main road (on Langkawi map). The turn to the temples is easy to miss, marked only by a small sign visible when driving from Kuah.

You can get there by taxi (Grab) or rental transport. A ride from Pantai Cenang or Tengah beaches will cost about 25–30 ringgit. Turning towards the temples and driving 200 meters, you'll reach a fork — the Hindu temple Kuil Sri Muniswarar is on the right, and the Buddhist temple Wat Tham Kisap (Lucky Temple) is on the left. Parking is free.
