Lombok Island (Indonesia) - how to get to the island, transportation

In October 2011, Lombok International Airport (Bandara Internasional Lombok) began operating on the island of Lombok. The airport is located near the city of Praya, about 55 kilometers from the main tourist area of Senggigi Island. See the location of the airport on the map.

The airport accepts daily domestic flights with Bali and Java. International flights connect the island with Singapore, Kuala Lumpur. You can pick up and purchase air tickets to Bali through the flight ticket search form below. The search for tickets to Lombok is not yet available.

There are up to eight daily flights from Bali to Lombok lasting about 25 minutes. The cost of the flight Bali-Lombok is 300 000-500 000 rupees (30-55 dollars) in one direction. It is quite difficult to find and buy Bali – Lombok air tickets on the Internet (even if you do, you probably won't be able to pay with a non-Indonesian credit card), so it's best to buy them at the airport or at any travel agency in Bali. These flights, although regular, can easily be postponed or canceled altogether if there are not enough passengers, but this usually happens in low season. If you purchase a Merpati airline ticket in advance, you should confirm your intention to fly by phone the day before departure.

When departing from the airport, you will need to pay an airport fee of 30,000 rupees (a little more than $ 3) for a domestic flight and 100,000 rupees ($11) for an international one. For passengers of some airlines, at least AirAsia, the fee is already included in the ticket price.

How to get from/to Lombok Airport

By bus. The most inexpensive way to get to your hotel in Lombok from the new airport is by a special shuttle bus. The bus departs to the bus station in the capital of the island of Mataram (Mataram's Mandalika Bus Terminal) every hour and costs 15,000 rupees ($1.6). To the resort of Senggigi (Senggigi), the bus departs every hour and a half and costs 25,000 rupees, the journey time is about two hours.

By taxi. It is best to use an official taxi, including Airport Taksi, Bluebird taxi or Express taxi. All cars are equipped with meters (taxi-meter) and there is no point in negotiating or agreeing to a fixed cost. A trip from the airport to the resort area of Sengigi will cost 125,000- 155,000 rupees, to Mataram – 75,000-100,000 rupees. In addition to the cost of the official taxi ride, you will have to pay an additional airport service fee in the amount of 17,500 rupees. The service fee is paid before the trip at the "Taxi Service" counter in the airport arrivals hall. After paying the fee, you will receive a receipt with which you can already go to the taxi parking.

By boat/ferry

Bali – Lombok by ferry. The most popular and frequent ferry route is from Bali. In addition, it is the cheapest way to get from Bali to Lombok. Instead of 300,000 rupees for a 25-minute flight from Bali, you will get there by ferry for only 36,000 rupees.

Ferries from Bali depart from Padang Bai Pier around the clock every hour and take about 4-5 hours. Ferries can not be called comfortable, but they have everything you need. There is another problem: ferries are often delayed, and in case of bad weather they are canceled altogether, so there is a chance to arrive at Padang Bai and stay there to wait for good weather.

A comprehensive ferry transfer can be purchased at travel agencies in Bali (it includes delivery to the pier in Bali and delivery from Lombok Pier to the final destination) for about 130,000 rupees, but you can independently arrive at the Padang Bai pier and buy tickets directly at the box office. Be careful and do not buy tickets with your hands, even if they offer a price less than the official one.: these are fake tickets and you may not be allowed on board.

From Lembara Pier you can get by shuttle bus (Bemo) to Mataram for 5,000 rupees, by taxi to Kuta for about 250,000 rupees, by taxi to Sengigi for 50,000 rupees or the pier Bangsal Harbour (to get to the Gili Islands) from 100,000 rupees.

On a high-speed boat

Private companies in Bali offer a transfer directly to the island of Gili Trawangan or to Teluk Kode (this is a small bay next to Bangsal Marina) by speedboat. Which is good, boats depart even from tourist areas of Bali, and the ticket price often includes a transfer to the departure pier. How to get to the Gili Islands

From Lombok Island to the Gili Islands can be reached by boats that depart from the pier Bangsal Harbour. The pier, in turn, can be reached by taxi or minibus Bemo from the main tourist places of the island. See the position of Bangsal Harbour on the map. From there you can go on a cheap Public Boat (the cost is 8/9/10 thousand rupees depending on the island), or on more expensive tourist boats or passing merchant boats that are constantly waiting for tourists at the pier.

If you decide to use a Public Boat, buy tickets only at the ticket offices of the marina, and in no case with your hands, no matter how cheap they are offered to you. Boats depart mainly in the morning and as they fill up. In the late afternoon, when the wind and waves are getting stronger, boats go very rarely and traveling on them can be dangerous. Travel time is about an hour depending on the island.

If all Public Boats have left and no shipment is expected in the near future, then at the same ticket offices you may be offered a charter tourist boat. We recommend taking advantage of this opportunity and hiring a boat, but before that you can find companions in such a boat from among tourists right here on the pier. The cost of renting a charter boat is about 180 thousand rupees to the most remote island of Gili Trawangan.

Even at the pier there are constantly" on duty" molesters who pick up passengers and arrange them on passing cargo boats towards the islands. If you do not disdain to take advantage of this offer, then you can get to the Gili Islands from Bangsal pier quickly and almost at any time, since the boat is constantly cruising between the islands. The fare in a passing boat varies from case to case, but on average it is worth counting on 60 thousand rupees per person in one direction.

From Sengigi Beach it is also possible to reach the islands by tourist boats departing directly from the resort area. Tickets for such boats can be purchased at local travel agencies.

From Bali to the Gili Islands the easiest way to get there is by speedboat, as written above. The cheapest option is to make a route by ferry from Bali to Lombok, then from the Lembar pier to Bangsal Harbour, from where by Public Boat, but it will take you almost the whole day. Another composite route is from Bali to Lombok by plane, then by taxi to Bangsal Harbour, from where it will also take a lot of time by Public Boat to Gili and will be no cheaper for money than by high–speed boat.

Transport, what to use to move around the island

The most common and inexpensive way to get around the island of Lombok is a fixed–route taxi, or the so-called Bemo. These are minibuses converted to passenger transport, as for example in the photo. The cost of the trip varies depending on the distance and starts from 5000 rupees. You can rent a Bemo for a private trip, but such a trip will cost more than a taxi for the same distance and will be profitable only if you travel in a group. It is possible to travel by Bemo not only within the same city or tourist area on Lombok, but also between them, to get from/ to the airport and the marinas of the island.

Moving by taxi is also no less popular, but more expensive, although cheaper by an order of magnitude than in neighboring Bali. But the problem with a taxi is that it is not everywhere and can always be found, in which case you should resort to the help of the hotel staff and order it through the reception.

Such an exotic mode of transport as a horse-drawn carriage, the so-called cidomo, is also popular on the island. The cost of a trip on them is negotiable and usually no more than 10,000 rupees for a short trip, but negotiate the price in advance. By the way, this is the only mode of transport available on the Gili Islands.

Renting a vehicle on Lombok is possible, and in tourist areas it will not be difficult to find a motorcycle or car rental:

Renting a motorcycle will cost from 35,000 rupees (about four dollars) per day. Be sure to wear a helmet and turn on the headlight of the motorcycle, otherwise you will be fined. Also keep in mind that by law you can drive a full-fledged motorcycle only if you have the right to drive it. Ie, having a permit to drive a car does not automatically give you the right to drive a motorcycle.

Renting a car will cost from 150,000 rupees ($ 16) per day for the most modest transport. At the same time, the amount includes a limited mileage, and for everything that you roll over the limit, you will have to pay extra. The fuel is yours. You can rent a car with a driver from 325,000 rupees per day.

Both to drive a car and a motorcycle, you need to have an international license (driver's license), as well as a Russian home license! No one may ask them from you at the rental point, but this does not mean that they should not be. When you meet the police on the road, they will demand a "fine" of $ 15 from you for lack of rights.
