Kelud Volcano

🚶 How to get there: The height of the Kelud volcano is 1731 meters. But at the same time it is very easy to get to it, you don't have to climb up: there is a road leading almost to the very top, the walking part of the route is minimal. Spectacular views of the summit await you at the top, but, unfortunately, it is no longer possible to climb the official route to the crater itself, as it was done before the 2014 eruption. Previously, it was possible to climb the crater from the parking lot and go down to the lake in its center, the one whose water turned out to be so deadly in 1919. But today the main official route is closed by a fence, and you can only enjoy the views from the side and visit the hot sulfur springs.

So, to get to the official route, you will need to get to the city of Blitar, because this is the closest point (Gunung Semeru on the map). You can get to Blitar by train or bus from all major cities of Java, for example Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Malang, etc. In Blitar there are hotels and everything you need for a tourist stay, as well as cars and motorcycles with drivers are offered for a trip to Kelud. A good asphalt road leads almost to the very top, which ends with parking, a fence and a conditional observation deck. Theoretically, it is possible to easily bypass the fence and continue to the crater, but this is illegal, and according to some information, barbed wire was stretched on the very approach to the crater.

The same route can be reached from other neighboring towns of Keduri, Surabaya, Malang or Batu, but the cost of a trip by car with a driver will be much higher.

You can also get to the volcano on your own, for which you can rent a motorbike or a car in Malanga. The rental price will be from 70,000 rupees per day, and this round-trip route can be done in one day. But you can't drive your own transport all the way to the fence. It will have to be left in the parking lot, and then continue on foot for about 2 kilometers.

And now briefly about unofficial routes. If you want to climb the volcano on foot, then it is possible to do this, and the ascent is not so difficult, does not require special training, it can be done within one day. But it should be understood that this is dangerous, and we do not recommend doing this, especially on your own. The best way to do a hike is to use the services of guides. It is not necessary to hire a tour guide at a travel agency for this. It will be much cheaper to find a guide from among the locals, for which you can communicate with the locals, preferably with young people, in Blitar or Kediri.
