Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (Soekarno–Hatta International, IATA code - CGK) is the main airport of the country and the capital - Jakarta. Most international flights arrive here, and this is the main air gateway to Indonesia.

Also near the capital there is an old airport named after Halim Perdanakusuma (Halim Kuzuma, Halim Perdanakusuma International), which serves flights of several Asian budget airlines, mostly local, including from Bali. Flights from many countries are operated to Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta Airport, but due to the low tourist popularity, direct flights are not operated here from Russia and CIS countries, you can only get there with transfers via Qatar, UAE, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. Prices for ready-made flights are often high, because it is very far to fly (this is already another hemisphere). But in some cases, you can save money if you make up your own route by buying an inexpensive flight to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore separately, and from there to Jakarta to buy Asian budget airline tickets separately. However, when drawing up such a route, you should take more time to transfer, because if your flight is late, you will have to solve the problem with the flight to Jakarta on your own, airlines are not responsible for such a connection. And don't forget that when transferring in Bangkok, you will have to change the airport (see Bangkok Airport), and when flying through Kuala Lumpur, change the terminal (see about Kuala Lumpur Airport). Nevertheless, it is fair to say that even ready-made flights with transfers to Jakarta are the cheapest way to get to Indonesia from Russia and other CIS countries.

Airport facilities, terminals and infrastructure

Jakarta Airport is huge: it consists of three separate terminals T1, T2, T3, located at a distance from each other. In turn, T1 and T2 are also divided into "subterminals", which are located in the same building and connected by transitions. Each of these terminals is completely different about the others, as if they are different airports. Accordingly, the infrastructure and amenities in each of them are different, but in general everything that is necessary for tourists and travelers is available. Rather, we can even say that all terminals are "stuffed" with infrastructure and amenities in full, there is everything: round-the-clock currency exchange, ATMs, transfers, travel agencies, taxi booking, luggage storage, charging sockets, free Wi-Fi Internet, shops, a comfortable recreation area, a hotel in each of the terminals, and, of course, there are many cafes, restaurants and dry-free shops. There are even spas and massage parlors. Everything is equipped for the movement of disabled people, and where there are difficulties with this, special staff helps.

Travel information desk at the airport

• Terminal 1. It serves only domestic flights, respectively, there are no dry-free shops and official currency exchange. In 2019, it is planned to fully adapt it for the operation of only budget airlines.
• Terminal 2. It mainly serves domestic flights, and a number of international ones. In 2019, it is planned to re-equip it only for receiving international flights of budget airlines. There is all the infrastructure, including currency exchanges and convenience stores.
• Terminal 3. This is the newest international terminal. Most long-haul flights arrive here, so it is almost certain that if you arrive in Jakarta from Russia or other countries, you will find yourself in this T3.
• Terminal 4. It is under construction.

Currency exchange at Jakarta Airport

There is no official exchange in T1. In T2, the exchange does not work around the clock (07:00 to 02:00). In T3, currency exchange, banks and ATMs work around the clock.

The exchange rate is not bad and you can change the required amount for the first time of your stay. Please note that it is not so easy to find currency exchange in Jakarta, especially on weekends and in the evening, so it is better to change money at the airport immediately for the first few days of your stay. An additional 500 rupees are deducted from exchange amounts of less than $100.

For reference, here is the exchange rate of US dollars in one day in 2018 in T3 – 13 650 rupees, and in the city – 13 768 rupees, and this is only 11,800 rupees of difference (0.76 USD, see Indonesian currency and exchange rate) when exchanging $100.

VAT refund for tourists

There are VAT refund counters for tourists (Vat refund) in terminals 2 and 3.

Storage rooms

Available in T2 and T3, open from 05:00 to 24:00. The cost is 35,000 rupees (2.26 USD) for a small bag weighing up to 10 kilograms per day; 45,000 rupees for 10-20 kilograms; 55,000 for 20-30 kilograms.

Hotels in the airport

There are hotels in each of the terminals, but their prices are not the most budget. It is much cheaper to stay in one of the hotels near the airport, which can be reached by taxi. Taxi rides for short distances from the airport are best ordered through the Grab or Gojek applications.

Moving between terminals

Different terminals of Jakarta Airport are far from each other, and if you have a transfer with a terminal change, it is worth scheduling 30-60 minutes of time for it. Ideally, it is better to add 60 minutes, because for the first time it will not be easy to figure out the intricacies of transport and find everything.

To move between the terminals, free transport is provided: shuttle buses, basses, and the airport Sky Train. Perhaps in the future buses will be completely replaced by a train.

• Free shuttle basses. Run around the clock every 30 minutes between terminal entrances and exits. To find them, just follow the signs to the exit of the terminal.
• Airport Train Sky Train. The free airport train runs between all three terminals, and also connects them to the SHIA railway station, from where the train departs to the city center. From one to the other terminal it can be reached in just 5-7 minutes. As of the beginning of 2019, trains run from 04:30 to 24:00 hours with an interval of 26 minutes. The boarding platforms are located outside the terminals after the exit. It is easy to find them by following the signs.

How to get from the airport to the city and other resorts

Sukarno-Hatta International is located 30 kilometers from the center (airport on the map), but despite the short distance, it's better to set 2-3 hours on the way due to huge traffic jams. If you are traveling from the city to the airport for a recovering flight, then we generally advise you to leave 4 hours in advance in order to avoid unforeseen situations, especially during the rainy season (from December to March), when due to flooding, transport links to the airport in the most extreme cases may stop altogether.

So, from Jakarta International Airport to the city center you can get by taxi, buses, minivans, train, or you can rent a car at the airport. There is a lot of transport, it goes often, you can get there without problems with any budget. If you need to travel further around the island of Java right from the airport, then in most cases you will have to transfer to a train or bus in Jakarta, since transport does not go directly to other cities. You can leave the airport without a transfer in Jakarta only by bus to the cities of Bogor and Bandung. Learn more about all methods:

• By taxi

  A taxi ride from the airport will take from 1 hour, but during peak hours (16:30 -20:00 on weekdays) or during heavy rains it may take several hours. It is best to use an official taxi ordered at the counters, the trip will cost from 120,000 rupees (7.75 USD) up to 170,000 plus will have to pay about 10,000 rupees for toll roads. It is more profitable to place an order through Grab or Go-Jek applications, which will cost from 110,000 rupees (7.1 USD) to the tourist street Jalan Jaksa. The Uber international app does not work in Indonesia. For ordering, you can use free airport Wi-Fi.

  Jakarta Taxi

• Buses

  This is the cheapest and quite convenient way to get from/to the airport. There are several routes going to different parts of the city, as well as to the nearby cities of Bogor and Bandung. When purchasing tickets, you can specify the location / address of your hotel, and they will tell you which route is better to choose. If the hotel has not been booked yet and you do not know where to go, just choose the most popular tourist area in the center and Jalan Jaksa Street (see Jakarta hotels, in which area it is better to stay). The most popular buses of Damri company, which go to the Gambir railway station, from where you can get to the tourist street Jalan Jaksa even on foot with light luggage.

  Tickets are purchased at the counters in the arrival terminals. There are racks in each terminal, but note that in Terminal 2 it is located in subterminal 2F. Buses depart every 15-60 minutes depending on the direction.

  Here are the prices for the main directions:

  • Gambir (center and railway station Gambir, 15 minutes walk to the back street Jalan Jaksa). Every 30 minutes from 03:00 to 23:00 hours, 40,000 rupees (2.58 USD), an hour and a half on the way
  • Bogor (G. Bogor) – 55 000 rupees (3.55 USD)
  • Bandung (Bandung) – 115,000 rupees (7.42 USD)

• Minivans

  A number of companies, including the official airport carrier, offer a minibus ride to the door of the hotel if it is in the area of their routes. The carriers' counters are located in the arrival terminals, and to pick up a flight, just go through the drains and tell the location (address) of your hotel, you will be offered options. The trip will cost from 40,000. You can find and book minivan tickets through the popular Indonesian website https://www.redbus.id/en/

• By train

  At the end of 2017, an express train was launched between the airport and the city center, which can be reached bypassing traffic jams in less than one hour. The fare is 70,000 rupees (4.52 USD).

  Trains from the airport depart/arrive at the SHIA station (Soekarno-Hatta International Airport Railway Station), which is located in a separate building at the airport. It can be reached from the terminals by free airport SkyTrain trains (also launched at the end of 2017) and free buses. In general, the route by train will look something like this:

  • After receiving your luggage and exchanging money, follow the signs to exit the terminal to Skytrain.
  • Take the nearest Skytrain and get to SHIA for free.
  • At SHIA station, you buy a train ticket to the city at the vending machine (payment by credit card) or through the application.
  • Go to the train through the turnstiles.
  • Arrive at the BNI City Station (BNC), from where you can get to the hotel by taxi.
  Jakarta Airport Train

  Trains arrive/depart from the BNI City railway station (aka Sudirman Baru, station on the map), which is located in the central area of the city, but quite far from all tourist places and transport. There are no buses running next to it, and the nearest TransJakarta stop is almost a kilometer away, so the only option from here to get to the hotel is so far only a taxi.

  There is also the Batu Ceper station, where the train stops along the way, but you should not be interested in it, because it is located outside the city and is not interesting for tourists. You only need to go to BNI.

  In the future, it is planned to extend the line to a more convenient Manggarai station, where it will be possible to transfer to other city trains, including to the historical district of Kota or to Gondangdia station near the tourist area.

  Trains from the airport depart from 06:10 to 23:10 every 30-60 minutes according to the schedule. They depart from the city from 04:21 to 21:51 also every 30-60 minutes.
