📌 Comparing the resorts of the Caucasian Mineral Waters
The four main resorts of the CMW – Kislovodsk, Pyatigorsk, Zheleznovodsk and Yessentuki – form the backbone of vacations in this region. Of course, it's best to visit each one, as we've done many times ourselves. 🥇 Kislovodsk – the most popular CMW resort
Kislovodsk is the undisputed leader in terms of amenities and tourist life. It's easy to get here: a direct train arrives right in the center. The main treasure is the huge Kurortny Park (over 1000 hectares), with therapeutic walking trails, narzan fountains, a cable car, and even a Valley of Roses. Plus – well-developed infrastructure: plenty of cafes, restaurants, and tour kiosks. The downsides are high prices and crowds in season.
✔ Pros of Kislovodsk
- Huge well-kept park for walks
- Free narzan fountains (including dolomite narzan)
- Direct train connection, convenient for independent travelers
- Many tours: Ring Mountain, Medovye Waterfalls, Dombay, Arkhyz
- Well-developed tourist infrastructure – everything within walking distance
❌ Cons of Kislovodsk
- The highest prices for accommodation and food in the CMW
- Very crowded in peak season (July-August)
- Outside the resort zone – just a regular residential area, nothing to see
Who it's for: Those who want to combine treatment with active recreation, love long walks, and aren't willing to compromise on comfort. A great option for a first visit to the CMW.
By the way, about the beach: it used to be thought that the only beach in the CMW was in Zheleznovodsk. But now Kislovodsk also has an excellent beach on Strom Lake. So in summer, you can swim here too, adding some variety to your medical vacation.

Pyatigorsk is the largest city in the CMW. There's more everyday life here than in other resorts: trams, shopping malls, traffic jams. But the main thing is the unique medical base: radon baths, mud from Lake Tambukan, and many mineral springs. Tourists will enjoy taking the cable car up Mashuk Mountain, visiting Proval Lake, and exploring Tsvetnik Park. The downside is the contrast between the well-kept center and the neglected outskirts.
✔ Pros of Pyatigorsk
- The most diverse treatment options: radon, mud, waters, climate
- Rich historical and cultural heritage (Lermontov sites)
- Well-developed urban infrastructure (shops, transport)
- Lower prices than in Kislovodsk
- Many tours to the surrounding area and neighboring republics
❌ Cons of Pyatigorsk
- Many departmental sanatoriums that aren't easy to access
- The center is well-kept, but the outskirts may disappoint
- Noisy in high season, lots of cars
Who it's for: Those who need serious treatment (especially for musculoskeletal, skin, or nervous system issues), as well as lovers of urban atmosphere and history.

Zheleznovodsk is the smallest and, in our opinion, the coziest resort in the CMW. People come here for the Slavyanovskaya and Smirnovskaya medicinal waters, the mountain resort atmosphere, and the chance to swim in Kurortnoye Lake (which has a beach with lounge chairs, playgrounds, and catamaran rentals). Accommodation prices here are among the most affordable in the CMW. The downsides are the almost complete lack of entertainment and weak infrastructure, but you'll find all the essentials.
✔ Pros of Zheleznovodsk
- Very affordable accommodation prices
- Kurortnoye Lake with a beach (swimming, catamarans)
- Peace, quiet, clean mountain air
- Well-kept Kurortny Park with therapeutic walking trails
- Fountains with free water
❌ Cons of Zheleznovodsk
- No direct train (only via Mineralnye Vody)
- Almost no cafes, restaurants, or entertainment
- The main demographic is elderly people
Who it's for: Budget-conscious travelers traveling by car, families with kids (beach + park), and those seeking absolute peace and quiet.

Yessentuki is a resort with a narrow specialization: treatment of gastrointestinal diseases, liver disorders, and metabolic issues. The waters "Yessentuki-4" and "Yessentuki-17" are known throughout Russia. In our opinion, among all CMW resorts, it lags behind in cleanliness and upkeep, and there's almost nothing to do here. There are few attractions: Kurortny Park, the Semashko Mud Bath, the Tsander Mechanical Institute. If you don't need entertainment – this is a suitable option.
✔ Pros of Yessentuki
- The best water in Russia for treating gastrointestinal issues
- Affordable accommodation and food prices
- Good transport accessibility (train station in the center)
- Calm, unhurried atmosphere
❌ Cons of Yessentuki
- Few attractions and entertainment options
- Weak tourist infrastructure (few cafes, souvenirs)
- Boring for active travelers and young people
Who it's for: Those with specific gastrointestinal problems, who are ready to dedicate their vacation to treatment and don't expect lively entertainment.

If you're traveling in your own car, you're not tied to one place. We always plan our trips to stay in at least two cities, choosing opposite vibes. For example, first in Kislovodsk (lively, fun, lots of cafes), then in Zheleznovodsk (peace, beach, savings). Or Pyatigorsk + Yessentuki. It works out great – you get to experience each resort.
Here are some route ideas:
- Loop route through all resorts: Mineralnye Vody – Yessentuki – Kislovodsk – Ring Mountain – Zheleznovodsk – Pyatigorsk – back. The whole loop is about 150 km, you could do it in one day, but it's better to stretch it over 2-3 days.
- Scenic places in the CMW to drive to: Ring Mountain (near Kislovodsk), Medovye Waterfalls (Karachay-Cherkessia), Lake Tambukan (on the border with Kabardino-Balkaria), Beshtau Mountain (views of the entire region).
- Mountain trips: From Kislovodsk or Pyatigorsk, it's easy to drive to Dombay (about 200 km), Arkhyz (about 180 km), or the Elbrus region (about 150 km). The roads are mostly good.
Life hack: In the center of Kislovodsk and Pyatigorsk, parking is a problem – many no-stopping signs, tow trucks are very active. Leave your car at a paid parking lot at your hotel or at the entrance to the resort zone. It's better to get around the city itself on foot or by taxi.
👶 Where to go with kids in the CMW: choosing a family resort
With kids, it's best to go to Kislovodsk or Zheleznovodsk. Kislovodsk offers well-developed infrastructure: an amusement park, a dolphinarium, an ostrich farm, horseback riding, and playgrounds in Kurortny Park. Zheleznovodsk is a great option for families with young children: it's quiet, safe, and has a beach on Kurortnoye Lake with a gentle entry and a kids' zone. Pyatigorsk could also work, but it's more of a busy city. Yessentuki will likely seem boring to children.
- Kislovodsk: dolphinarium, circus, rope park, pony club, Lukomorye amusement park.
- Zheleznovodsk: beach, catamarans, playgrounds, tour of a bee farm.
- Pyatigorsk: Kirov Amusement Park, Proval Lake (interesting), puppet theater.
⛰ Where to go from Mineralnye Vody to the mountains – best tours
Many tourists come to the CMW not only for treatment but also to see the Caucasus Mountains. The most popular destinations:
- Dombay – a classic: mountain lakes, cable cars, views of Elbrus. A tour from Kislovodsk or Pyatigorsk takes a full day.
- Arkhyz – wilder and less commercialized nature, with ancient Alanian temples.
- Elbrus region – the chance to take a cable car up to 3800 meters and see glaciers.
- Medovye Waterfalls – small but scenic waterfalls not far from Kislovodsk (can be done in half a day).
- Ring Mountain – the famous rock with a hole, offering a panoramic view of Elbrus.
- Grozny – a tour to the capital of the Chechen Republic: the "Heart of Chechnya" mosque, skyscrapers, museum.
- North Ossetia (Vladikavkaz) – Kurtatinskoye and Dargavskoye gorges, the City of the Dead, medieval towers.
Tours can be bought locally (on Kurortny Boulevard in Kislovodsk or in Tsvetnik Park in Pyatigorsk), or you can book them online. Prices for one-day tours start at 1500 RUB per person.
🎯 Which CMW resort to choose: final recommendations
The choice depends on your goals, but here are our recommendations based on personal experience:
- 🥇 Want maximum experiences, beautiful walks, and well-developed infrastructure? – go to Kislovodsk.
- ⛰ Need comprehensive treatment (mud, radon) and interested in history? – choose Pyatigorsk.
- 🌳 Looking for coziness, peace, affordable prices, and a chance to swim? – head to Zheleznovodsk.
- 💧 Coming to treat your stomach and not expecting entertainment? – stay in Yessentuki.
- 🚗 Traveling by car and want to see everything? – the best base is Kislovodsk or Pyatigorsk, or even better – stay in two different cities.
We've been to all the resorts many times, and each one is good in its own way. We hope our comparison helps you make the right decision. Enjoy your vacation in the Caucasian Mineral Waters!
