Overview and Is It Worth Visiting
The Castle of Cunning and Love in the vicinity of Kislovodsk is a tourist complex housing a hotel and restaurant. But you don't have to be a hotel guest or a restaurant customer to visit. You can come here just for a walk, to enjoy the natural beauty and the architecture of the place. It's important to understand: this is not a historical landmark, but a modern structure (a so-called "new build"). However, the cliff, the gorge, and the surroundings are natural, and that's precisely why it's worth coming here.
The hotel consists of "Standard" and "Comfort" category rooms. The rooms are furnished with all necessary furniture, and guests are provided with a kettle, bed linen, and towels. The courtyard is spacious, with an artificial lake featuring a beautiful fountain and a bridge.
The local restaurant, with its authentic atmosphere, is part of an ancient complex. Its history dates back to 1921. They prepare Caucasian cuisine. You can sit in the main hall or choose a table on the summer terrace overlooking the scenic nature. The restaurant has all the conditions for spending time in a small group, as well as for hosting celebratory events.
Near the tourist complex is the eponymous cliff, 950 meters high, which served as the basis for the development of the tourist complex. You can visit this place as part of a guided tour, which will allow you to learn one of the interesting legends. But if you go on your own, don't limit yourself to just looking at the buildings and the complex grounds — be sure to climb the cliff and walk through the gorge.
Legend of the Castle of Cunning and Love
Long ago, a young man lived in these parts. He had no money; his main wealth was his kind heart and his beauty. One day, while herding a flock of sheep, he met a beautiful girl. They fell in love at first sight, but the gap in their social standing prevented them from being together. The girl's father was a wealthy merchant; he planned to marry off his only daughter to an old but wealthy neighbor. The lovers fled to avoid being separated, but they were soon caught by the pursuers. They ended up on a high cliff, and to avoid being parted and to not betray their love, they jumped off the cliff.
According to another version, the young man jumped, but she got scared and betrayed him, later finding someone else. That's why the cliff got the name "Cunning and Love."
They say that if you look closely at the outlines of the cliffs, you can see the silhouettes of a young man and a woman. The name "castle" came about because the cliff, from a certain angle, resembles a medieval fortress. True, you can only see this resemblance in winter when the trees are bare — in summer, the dense foliage completely hides the "castle."
Useful Tips
- On the way to the castle, 500 meters before reaching it, there is a natural narzan spring — you can collect some water.
- Visiting the castle is more interesting with a tour from Kislovodsk, as it includes visits to other interesting places and a story about the castle.
- Photographers with animals operate very actively and aggressively on the premises. Their prices are high, and if you're not willing to pay over 1000 rubles for a photo, don't even agree to supposedly free "just hold it."
- Footwear: The trails leading to the cliff are dirt, with sharp rocks and slippery sections in places. Walking in flip-flops or light dress shoes is uncomfortable and dangerous. Wear closed-toe shoes (trainers or trekking sandals). Trekking poles are not needed — they will likely get in the way.
- Don't expect panoramic views from the top of the cliff in summer — everything is overgrown with trees. It's better to walk the trails on the slopes, where there are grottoes and interesting rock formations.
- For the entire complex (cliff exploration + leisurely walk through the gorge + lunch), budget 2–3 hours. Just climbing and viewing the cliff will take 30 minutes.
Walk Along the Cliff and Alikonovka River Gorge
The Castle of Cunning and Love is not just a hotel with a restaurant. The main natural attraction here is the cliff, on the slopes of which paths are laid. To the left of the cliff begins a gorge (a tributary of the Alikonovka River). You can go down and walk along the stream — there are beautiful rocky banks, small waterfalls, and cozy spots to rest.
If you go through the Aminovka River gorge (to the right of the cliff), you can reach the Medovye Waterfalls. This is a full-fledged hiking route for trekking enthusiasts (about 5 km one way). Along the way, you'll encounter scenic views, and the route itself is often offered with horseback rides.
On the slopes of the cliff, you will see several grottoes, bizarre rock formations, and even artificial structures stylized as castle towers. See photos of these places in our gallery below.
How to Climb the Cliff
To get onto the cliff, look for the trails that start behind the "Saklya" cafe (located right at the foot). There are two options:
- A steeper trail — starts behind "Saklya" on the stream side.
- A gentler trail — right behind the cafe.
If you can't find the entrance, just ask the cafe staff — they'll be happy to show you. The climb is easy and requires no special equipment, but be careful near the cliffs, especially with children. On a clear day, the trails offer beautiful views of the valley.
Important: climbing to the very top of the cliff in summer is pointless — the summit is densely overgrown, and you won't see a panorama. However, walking along the side trails (where you'll find grottoes and stone "fingers") is just right.
What Else to See Nearby
- Horseback riding — routes on horses are offered along the Alikonovka Gorge (ask at local tour agencies or at the complex entrance).
- Grottoes and rock arches — both artificial and natural, they make for atmospheric photos.
- "Devil's Finger" — a vertical, strangely shaped stone on one of the trails.
🕐 Opening Hours

🚶 How to Get There
The Castle of Cunning and Love is located 7 kilometers from the center of Kislovodsk (Castle of Cunning and Love on the map).
A tour just to the castle is not very interesting, so we recommend choosing options that include visits to several places at once. You can buy tours including the castle online on Tripster.ru.
A taxi or personal car trip to the castle from the center of Kislovodsk will take 10–20 minutes. A one-way taxi ride will cost from 250 rubles if ordered through aggregator apps. Getting there by personal car is easy; a decent paved road leads all the way to the parking lot at the complex. Parking directly at the complex entrance and near the tourist market is paid, but 50–100 meters before it, you can find many spots for free parking.
You can also get here by city transport. In the center, take bus #5 (departs from the railway station, not from the Colonnade, see the route on the map), and ride it to the "Tsvetochnaya Ulitsa" stop, then walk one and a half kilometers. The bus runs infrequently, so check the schedule at the stops or via the link above.
