What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
Red stones is a place of little note at first glance in Kislovodsk National Park, and most tourists visit these places simply because they are marked on the signs installed along the walking paths in the park. But in fact it is a unique geological landmark. The fact is that a long time ago the sea was located at this place, and mountain rivers washed rock from the mountains for thousands of years and brought it to the bottom. In the course of tectonic activity, the compressed rocks formed at the bottom of the sea rose from the water, and then, under the influence of precipitation and winds, they lost part of the soft rock, forming rocks of a bizarre shape of bright red color.
The red stones consist of two groups located a few meters apart from each other. The first group of red stones is a sandy rock, on the south side of which in 1924 a high-relief portrait of V. I. Lenin was installed directly into the rock. Unfortunately, during the earthquake the original composition was destroyed, and therefore in 1927 it was recreated anew, but now the sculpture was made of durable metal.
A little further there is a second group of stones with a sculpture of an eagle, which, spreading its wings, holds a snake in its mighty claws and pecks it. According to one of the legends, a mighty eagle lived on these lands a long time ago, proud and invincible. He guarded the local expanses with his gaze and strength. One day he landed on a rock, but did not notice that a snake was hiding under it. The bite was fatal, but the eagle bit its enemy to death and expired. The bird fell down, but fortunately for him, there was a healing spring below, the waters of which brought the eagle back to life. The author of the sculpture took this legend as the basis of the theme of his work, and therefore the eagle symbolizes the power of the local mineral water over diseases.
A group of Red Stones with an eagle can be climbed along a steep path. At the top there is a natural observation deck with views of the national Park.
