History

The dates of the foundation of the Pechersk monastery are considered to be 1328 or 1330. At that time, the monk Dionysius set out from the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra on a journey, taking with him the holy image – a copy of the Pechersk icon of the mother of God, which appeared on the wall of the Great Assumption Church in the Kiev-Pechersk monastery for almost three centuries before the foundation of the Pechersk monastery. Reaching the banks of the Volga River on a steep bank, he dug a cave where he spent time in prayer and fasting. Believers from the surrounding area began to flock to him and the construction of a wooden church in the name of the ascension of the Lord began. Cells, outbuildings, belfries grew up next to the new church, and after that it received the current name of the Pechersk monastery in memory of the first caves excavated here.

For almost three centuries, the monastery was built and expanded, stone buildings appeared, but in 1597 almost everything was destroyed by a landslide. Fortunately, no one was injured then, all the monks were taken out in advance.

The temple and monastery were restored in a new place a little closer to the city center. It acquired a completely different look, the work was completed only in the middle of the next XVII century. Since then, the overall architectural appearance has not changed, although the completion was carried out until the XIX century.

During the Soviet period, the monastery was closed and looted "for the needs of the people", but was not destroyed. In 1960, the preserved buildings were given the status of an architectural monument of national significance, and in 1994 the monastery was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church.
